Mortal, the owner and the player of the most beloved team in Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), Team SouL, said that he would not be leading the team during the game. During a conversation telecasted on the BGMI ‘The Launch Party’ livestream, Naman "Mortal" Sandeep Mathur revealed he will be the "IGL filter" behind the actual in-game leader (IGL). Despite giving up on the position, the Indian BGMI player also talked about how he had developed his leadership qualities over the years and his expectations from BGMI’s first tournament, ‘The Launch Party.’
Mortal talks about the IGL role in Team SouL
Mortal is widely regarded as one of the first professional players who drove the Indian mobile esports scene to the global stage. By many, he is also considered as one of the best and calmest IGLs in the scene. Mortal reflected on how he developed these leadership skills, saying,
I feel whatever the fans think and say about me, I feel that I have seen someone or the other as my idol. And I have only tried to enact that person, even if it is a cartoon character who has a good attitude and something like that. If it’s a story about a football player, I have found some good things in them.Mortal
However, it seems like Mortal does not want to lead his new team. He stated that he would not be the IGL for his new team. He did not mention the name of the new player who would lead the game.
By the way, one thing I would like to correct, that I used to be an IGL but I have dropped that idea now. I will be the IGL filter, the position that comes after IGL. I will be the second person who will be leading the team.Mortal
In November 2020, Mortal announced that he would be taking a break from competitive gaming as well as stepping down as the team's IGL. During that period, he said that if the game returned, he could be the team's mentor and sixth member.
As PUBG Mobile returned in the form of BGMI, Mortal was apparently part of the five-man active Team SouL roster, which involved Tanmay "Scout" Singh, Harmandeep "Mavi" Singh, Naman "Mortal" Sandeep Mathur, Yash Paresh "Viper" Soni, and Parv "Regaltos" Singh.
Mortal stated that he intends to continue competing in the game.
I was super excited (about the launch of the game). I am looking forward to everybody having access to the game and playing it, as well as the start of the competitive circuit. This is because I decided that I have to continue playing competitively.Mortal
Team SouL is currently competing as Team Mortal in Krafton’s inaugural BGMI tournament ‘The Launch Party.’ When asked what he expects from the tournament, he said,
The biggest highlight of the launch party is our new lineup. We are going to play together for the first time. We have literally not practiced together and it is going to be the beginning of our journey at the Launch Party.Mortal
Mavi previously led the PUBG Mobile team of OREsports to a second place finish at the PUBG Mobile World League 2020 - Season 0: East, among other top results. Team SouL probably will have Mavi as the IGL based on his past experience in the role.
