“Call of Duty: Mobile is from which country?”, was the question on the minds of some Indian fans of the multiplayer shooter when PUBG Mobile got banned in Sept 2020. The battle royale was one of many Chinese apps removed from the Indian Google Play Store after a series of bans last year. For fans wondering from which country is Call of Duty: Mobile, let us look at the mobile game's development. Activision, the Call of Duty game franchise creator, developed the mobile game with TiMi Studios, a subsidiary of Tencent Games. Tencent Games is a major Chinese multinational technology company based in Shenzhen, China. Tencent also had a 5% ownership stake in Activision. However, in India, the game was published by Activision so it did not get banned like PUBG Mobile unfortunately did. Activision later cut ties with Tencent and TiMi Studios due to Donald Trump’s executive order against Tencent Games which prevented any transaction with Tencent Games. Both Timi and Tencent logos are not a part of the loading screen anymore and were removed in early August last year. This was good news for Indian fans since the question of which country is Call of Duty: Mobile from didn’t matter anymore.
Activision's logo replaced Tencent Games and TiMi Studios' logos in August 2020
Call of Duty: Mobile is developed by Timi Studios and published via Activision and Garena. Unlike Free Fire, there are some concerns regarding the game, as Timi Studios is entirely owned by Tencent Games. Another game in which Timi Studios is involved, Arena of Valor, has also been banned in India along with PUBG Mobile. However, due to which country Call of Duty: Mobile is from, this won’t affect the game in India.
Did Activision cut ties with Tencent over the potential Call of Duty: Mobile ban?
With several countries taking up an anti-China stance over the past year for various reasons, according to a GamingOnPhone report, Activision was unhappy with Tencent for ‘taking’ features from Call of Duty: Mobile and bringing them to PUBG MOBILE. This could be a possible reason for Activision to cut ties with Tencent and TiMi Studios. However, this theory does not make sense after the release of Call of Duty: Mobile in China, which was published by Tencent. On 25th Dec 2020, Tencent’s Timi Studio and Activision announced on their Weibo page that the Call of Duty: Mobile was available in China Over 70 million players pre-registered for Call of Duty: Mobile's China release leading up to the launch day.
