Rumor has it that Sega has plans to develop a remake of their 2003 platformer Sonic Heroes, originally released for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, Windows, and the GameCube. What captured the attention of many is the fact that this remake will be built on the Unreal Engine 5, renowned for its superior graphical capabilities. Multiple sources such as the famed Sega leaker Midori, Zippo, and Universo Nintendo have fueled excitement among fans, who are eager to see this 6th generation title receive a modern makeover.
Sega Plans to Move Most of Its Franchises to Unreal Engine 5
Zippo, who has leaked many Sega games in the past states that the company plans to transition the development of most existing franchises to Epic’s Unreal Engine 5, claiming that popular entries like Jet Set Radio (JSR) and Crazy Taxi would be some of the remakes to go through this.
This was soon followed by another post from Zippo, mentioning that Sonic Heroes would get the same UE5 treatment. While many fans questioned this at first, this information was soon corroborated by Universo Nintendo, stating that the game would be released in 2025 for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and the upcoming successor of the Nintendo handheld, presumably named the Nintendo Switch 2.
While many regarded Zippo’s statements as inaccurate information, famed leaker Midori, who has been on point with numerous Sega and Atlus titles in the past, including the last two Persona titles and the recently leaked Sonic Toys Party mobile game.
Midori mentioned that most of the details by Zippo are correct, including the fact that the Sega group has plans to move most of its franchises to UE5. They also confirmed that Crazy Taxi and JSR are indeed UE5 Remakes, however, the company’s in-house engines like Hedgehog 2 and Dragon will still be used selectively, as Sega wants its developers to be versatile and experienced on different game engines.
Midori expressed skepticism about a 2025 launch, stating that although the Sonic Heroes remake is being considered, they lacked any insider information about the game launching within the next three years. Additionally, they also dispelled rumors regarding the remake of Sonic Adventures stating that neither the first nor the second game is currently in development.
