The League of Legends World Championship aka Worlds is a celebration of a kind in the community and Worlds 2022 is no different. This year fans were treated to exhilarating matches right from the get-go starting with the Play-in stage and things only got better. On 5th November, two League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) teams were at the center stage only a best-of-five (BO5) series standing between them. However, a moment during the Opening Ceremony of Worlds 2022 led to the Twitch chat spamming “Ty, Mastercard.” The Mastercard spam is not new to the community since the company is one of the many sponsors for the international tournament.

Worlds 2022 Opening Ceremony recap

The Opening Ceremony has always been a keystone of Worlds, with artists setting the stage on fire, with the Worlds anthem blasting the roof of the venue. This year, Lil Nas X headlined the ceremony with his Worlds 2022 anthem: STAR WALKIN’. However, fans also witnessed a chills-inducing performance by GOT7 star Jackson Wang, who performed “Fire to the Fuse”, and Edda Hayes of the 2WEI collective, who performed “The Call.

Riot Games brought grandeur and pomp to the stage by bringing champions like Pyke, Lux, Kai’Sa and Azir to life during the live performance using its Artificial Reality (AR) integrated choreography.

Fans recognize Mastercard logo during Opening Ceremony

During one of the performances, the camera moved up to capture an aerial view of the stage and fans were surprised to see the on-stage effects and lights making a familiar shape: the Mastercard Logo with the orange and yellow rings.

Mastercard serves as the official global financial services partner for Riot Games’ League of Legends Worlds, and a new deal in 2021 extended the successful four-year partnership to the League of Legends European Championship (LEC).

During the games, every time the first Mythic item gets completed by a player, the Mastercard jingle would play on broadcast with its logo appearing briefly before the item is shown on screen.  This has been the case for many years and for the first time, fans were equally surprised and shocked by the logo placement during the Worlds 2022 Opening Ceremony.

The Mastercard logo briefly appeared on the stage while Jackson Wang was performing the Empyrean skin line song, Fire to the Fuse. At first glance, it looked like it was an effect to enhance the performance but later fans realized that it was the logo and spammed, “TY, Mastercard” in chat.

The final BO5 of this year between T1 and DRX is underway and the winner will walk away with the prize money and the coveted Summoner’s Cup.
