MSI 2024: Format, Teams Participating, & Other Details

Fans of League of Legends esports are more than just excited to see the top teams from across the world go up against each other in the first international tournament of the year. While the 2024 League of Legends esports season kicked off with the Spring Split in the regions of North America, China, and South Korea, and the Winter Split in Europe, Middle East, and Africa [EMEA], the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) 2024 will be the benchmark for competition for this year. MSI 2024 will feature two teams from major League of Legends esports regions: The winner of the split and the runner-up. 

Riot Games announced that the MSI 2024 will be played in Chengdu, China this year and the tournament will take place in May. A total of 12 teams from around the world will participate in the first international League of Legends tournament of the year, noted Riot Games.

Excitingly, for the first time ever, the winning team at MSI 2024 will be awarded a guaranteed spot at Worlds 2024 and this will also count as an additionally slot for that respective region. However, to ensure that the Worlds-qualified team is committed to its success in the home league, it should still qualify for its region's Summer Split Playoffs.

MSI 2024 Format & Seeding

Riot Games said, "The League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational is coming to Chengdu, China! From May 1-19, 12 qualified teams from around the world will take to the global stage for the first time this year at the Chengdu Financial City Performing Arts Center."

The MSI 2024 event will feature two double-elimination stages: the Play-In Stage and the Bracket Stage. This will give regions more opportunities, noted the publisher.

Stage 1 (Play-In)

• Eight teams participate

• Teams are drawn into two double-elimination brackets

• Matches are best-of-three (BO3)

• The top two teams from each group advance to Stage 2

Stage 2 (Bracket)

• Eight teams participate

• This includes four teams prequalified for Stage 2 + the four qualifiers from Stage 1

• Double-elimination bracket

• Matches are best-of-five (BO5)

The winner of MSI 2024 qualifies for the World Championship. However, this spot will only become effective if the winning team reaches the playoffs in their domestic Summer split. The second best region in the final standings will also unlock an additional seed for its domestic league at Worlds 2024.

MSI 2024 Schedule

MSI has two stages: the Play-In Stage (1st to 5th May) and the Bracket Stage (7th to 12th May, 14th to 19th May). The tournament will take place in the Chengdu Financial City Performing Arts Center in Chengdu, China.
