The survey found an increase in the willingness of consumers to pay for gaming subscriptions among other positive patterns.

Homegrown platform Loco conducted an esports and gaming survey to study and understand the gaming habits and preferences of gamers in India for the EY-FICCI Media & Entertainment Industry ‘Window of Opportunity Report 2023’. In a press release, Loco reported that over 13,000 respondents from the Indian Gaming Community (IGC) took part in the survey that helped paint a picture of the current Indian gaming landscape, market trends, consumer preferences, and behavioral evolution.

Titled ‘Trends in online gaming’, the joint survey by EY and Loco dug into the evolving demographics and profile of gamers, touching upon the importance of game accessibility to attract and retain a diverse player base.

The survey also revealed that there is a strong and growing demand for competitive gaming experiences and the potential for the industry to grow in India. Here’s everything you need to know about the ‘Trends in Online Gaming’ survey by EY and Loco.

Findings of the Survey by Loco and EY

One of the key takeaways of the survey by Loco and EY stated that almost two-thirds of respondents who played games were willing to spend for a gaming subscription. The other key findings of the Trends in Online Gaming survey are as follows:

Growing Appetite for Subscriptions: Almost two-thirds of 13,000 respondents were willing to pay for gaming subscriptions, indicating a growing willingness among Indian gamers to pay for high-quality gaming experiences.

Higher In-App Purchases: Over half of the respondents were willing to pay for in-app purchases. This behavior enables game developers to create well-planned monetization roadmaps for their products.

Gaming is the preferred entertainment format: 45% of respondents said that they spend over an hour per game-playing session, suggesting that Indian gamers are moving beyond casual gaming and are invested in serious gameplay. The survey additionally revealed that despite working from the office, almost 50% of respondents spent more time on gameplay, denoting a growing appetite for serious gaming.

Increasing Popularity of Esports: 61% of the respondents stated that they have participated in esports events and viewed at least one tournament a month.

Loco founders Anirudh Pandita and Ashwin Suresh said about the survey, “This survey helps industry participants like game developers, advertisers, and investors, develop a better understanding of the Indian gamer and drive business impact for them.” They said they hope to continue gathering insights that will help shape the future of gaming in India.
