Apex Legends was released for PC, PS4 and Xbox One on February 4, 2019 by Respawn Entertainment. Since its release on multiple platforms including the Nintendo Switch, and now with plans to release it on mobile, fans have been hoping that the developers add cross-progression to Apex Legends. While it is not currently available, the developers have said they would be introducing cross-progression in the near future. Respawn has touched on the topic of cross-progression in Apex Legends numerous times. Game director Chad Grenier over the year has spoken about cross progression in a developer panel, on Twitter and during a Reddit AMA.
Does Apex Legends have cross-progression right now?
Currently, Respawn has not implemented cross-progression in Apex Legends. However, players on PC have a sort of cross-progression active between Origin and Steam. Players can link their account on Origin to their account on Steam and all their account progression and unlocks will carry over between the two platforms. This feature is not currently available for consoles like Xbox, PlayStation and the Nintendo Switch.
Apex Legends Game Director Chad Grenier has said in response to a Reddit post in 2020 that it was “much harder” to implement cross-progression “since users may have multiple accounts to merge or use.” It was “easier with Steam because it's at launch.”
Chad Grenier later talked about the issue during a developer panel with BrownGirlGamerCode in April 2021 saying “One other thing I’m passionate about is cross-progression, which we don’t support yet. But, we are working on it. It’s a lot more work than I thought it would be. But we are working on cross-progression that will allow people to carry over purchases, skins, account progress, regardless of which platform they’re playing on”, essentially reiterating Respawn’s position on the issue.
When will cross-progression come to Apex Legends?
Grenier gave players an update on Twitter earlier in July about an update on the cross-progression stating that hacks on Apex Legends and Titanfall were slowing down progress on it.
In August, Respawn’s Director of Community and Communications Ryan Rigney replied during an AMA just after the release of Season 10 of Apex Legends saying it would be coming out “next year”.
This means cross-progression should most probably come to Apex Legends in 2022.
