Is Catalyst Trans in Apex Legends?

Catalyst is one of the best Controller legends in Apex Legends thanks to her ability to synergize with Seer. She has quickly become a staple character in the meta and sees a lot of play in high ranks and in esports. Respawn Entertainment introduced her to the game as the first transgender character and there was a lot of work that went in behind the scenes to make sure the trans community was represented appropriately.

Catalyst is the first transgender Apex Legends character

While Bloodhound was the first non-binary character, they do not identify with either gender. A lot of players are confused about who the first trans character in Apex Legends is because of Bloodhound. Bloodhound is not trans and identifies as non-binary. Catalyst takes the distinction of being the first trans character in Apex Legends.

Respawn Entertainment told GamesRadar that it worked with its employees on a personal level to understand how Catalyst would be represented.

The devs stated, “There were people who have lived these experiences who have been very honest and forthcoming about difficult topics. And there are people who haven't lived these experiences that were really open to hearing about them and taking feedback. And just trying to make the best character they could with all of this information – and really make something we're proud of."

The studio decided to partner with GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) and cast transgender voice actor Meli Grant as the voice actor for Catalyst. All aspects of Catalyst’s design including her character design, voice lines, and backstory were designed to be respectful toward trans people.
