League of Legends has 163 champions currently and this list increases regularly with Riot Games adding new characters to the game. The best part about the game is that players are presented with different options when it comes to choosing skins and cosmetics for their favorite champions. There are different themes, lores, alternate universes within Runeterra and the Blood Moon is one such series of alternate universe skins in League of Legends. It is set in the mythos of Ionia and features many Ionian champions as demons or cult worshipers of the Blood Moon.

The Blood Moon skin line was introduced to the game after it was first featured in the Journal of Justice (Issue 22: Ionia Celebrates Annual Festival of Fire).

Here’s everything you need to know about the Blood Moon skins in League of Legends, the lore behind them and the champions who have undergone this makeover.

Blood Moon Skins in League of Legends

In the official lore, Riot Games describes the Blood Moon theme, “An ancient cult, seeking irresistible power, surfaces on nights of the Blood Moon to perform profane, esoteric rites—merging their flesh with demonic spirits, and becoming one with an ever greater darkness.” In League of Legends, the Blood Moon is among the most powerful entities of the multiverse.

As mentioned earlier, the Blood Moon skins are split into two:

  • Blood Moon Cultists

  • Blood Moon Demons

Here are the champions and skins under each category:

Cultists:

  • Blood Moon Akali

  • Blood Moon Diana

  • Blood Moon Elise

  • Blood Moon Jhin

  • Blood Moon Shen

  • Blood Moon Sivir

  • Blood Moon Twisted Fate

  • Blood Moon Katarina

  • Blood Moon Master Yi

  • Blood Moon Yasuo

  • Blood Moon Zilean

Some interesting trivia about the cultists is that Zilean is the figurehead of the cult while Twisted Fate is their true leader. Jhin is an ink-mage and the master of ceremonies presiding over summoning rituals with Sivir, Elise and Akali taking up the role of priestesses. Yasuo is considered the ceremonial executioner and Shen is the bodyguard to important persons. Meanwhile, the Blood Moon lore states that “Diana is a cultist who carries lost secrets that even demons don't know.

The Blood Moon demons are as follows:

  • Blood Moon Aatrox

  • Blood Moon Evelynn

  • Blood Moon Kalista

  • Blood Moon Kennen

  • Blood Moon Pyke

  • Blood Moon Thresh

  • Blood Moon Talon

  • Blood Moon Rhaast

  • Blood Moon Tryndamere

Aatrox is considered the progenitor of all demons and is a world-endign creature birthed directly from the Blood Moon. Whereas, Pyke, Evelynn, Kennen, Talon, Thresh and Kalista are simply demons who are summoned on the night of the Blood Moon.

Simply put, the Blood Moon skins share similarities to most of the Shadow Isles skins but they just have an Ionian twist to them.
