Puppey and iNSaNiA Give Their Thoughts on the Best Dota 2 Region

“Which region is the best? All time question that will get you heat in every type of Reddit post,” responded Clement "Puppey" Ivanov, Team Secret's captain, when asked about the best region in Dota 2. Among Dota 2 fans, this is a frequently discussed topic, which was addressed by some of the best professionals in Europe during a DreamLeague live broadcast. While Puppey did not mention a region since he felt it didn't "really matter," Team Liquid's captain Aydin "iNSaNiA" Sarkohi believes Europe is the region with the greatest depth, using the ESL One Stockholm Major 2022 held in May 2022 as a standard. Nevertheless, he also went on to say that building opinions solely based on results was not the best approach.

Fans of Dota 2 are always debating which region is the best in the game. Typically, they are biased towards the region where they are located and tend to mock other regions, so Dota 2 pros were asked to give their opinion on which region is the best out of Western Europe, North America, South America, Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, and China.

While Puppey joked in jest that this was an all-time question that garnered a lot of attention on Reddit, he noted that he didn't really care which region was best.

“I don’t care which region is best. I don’t care because it doesn’t really matter in the scale of things to talk about it right now. Obviously, we can talk about the world: Europe is the best. Then comes China. What does it matter really because obviously we can just say these words but it is more of a statistical game anyway,” said Puppey.

iNSaNiA, while noting the depth of Europe (EU), also focused on the performance of South America (SA) and Southeast Asia (SEA) during the Stockholm Major.

“I think EU probably is the deepest region, at least out of the ones at the Major. I think SA has some really nice top teams - Thunder Awaken, very strong team. I think maybe they surprised some people. But it’s always hard to tell. I think SEA didn’t look good at this event but Fnatic was so close to beating OG. It could have been a completely different result. I think looking too much at the results doesn’t necessarily reflect the strength of the region.” said iNSaNiA

OG, the eventual Major champion, was heavily contested during its long run in the lower bracket by only Fnatic. OG had been on the verge of elimination before making a stellar comeback to win 2-1 in this series in the lower bracket.

Gaimin Gladiators' emerging carry player Anton "dyrachyo" Shkredov concluded that Europe was the best out of all of them based on the results of the Stockholm Major. “I cannot say anything about China because we didn’t play them at all. I think it’s the EU region. Last Major, it’s three European teams in the top four so I think it’s probably EU region,” he said.

Chinese teams were not able to travel to the Major because of travel restrictions. A look at the final results revealed that OG, Tundra Esports, and Gaimin Gladiators - three European teams formed part of the top four.

The discussion of which region is the strongest in Dota 2 might continue for as long as the game exists, but based on past performances, Europe and China have proven to be the two regions that generate a lot of successful teams.
