A recent Facebook video posted on the Evil Geniuses page shared Fly's thoughts on what it takes to be a leader and how he fulfills his role as one.
In his view, a player should not become a captain simply for the sake of being a captain.
The way he sees it, he personally feels the responsibility to push success for Evil Geniuses and to ensure that the team functions effectively not only within, but also outside the game.

Tal "Fly" Aizik is a seasoned Dota 2 professional who currently leads the Dota 2 squad of Evil Geniuses. In addition to being an old hand in competitive play, he has been held in high regard and serves as an inspiration to many young players.

Being a holistic leader is important for Evil Geniuses’ captain Fly

Fly, who has led Evil Geniuses for more than three years now, believes that leadership comes naturally. “So, being a leader is something that I think in a way some people have it or some don’t,” he said.

Fly then spoke about how some individuals may also take a wrong path when it comes to leadership, wherein, they want things to proceed as they desire and want to be in charge. In his case, he likes to take responsibility and make sure all conditions are met in order to achieve success with his team.

“It (leadership) is not always a good thing, right? Like if you wanna be the leader for the sake of being kind of on top of things and like telling people what to do, I think it’s wrong, right? I think I do it because I feel like a responsibility towards obviously the success of myself and the team and I wanna make sure that every possible condition is met for us to be successful.”

Ensuring all conditions are met is not just what Fly does within the game, but also outside of it. He considers eating healthy food and exercise to be important aspects for being a better competitor. It is not only important for him to follow this principle for himself, but he also seeks to encourage everyone around him to do the same.

“That’s something I definitely think is not just in the game but it’s also outside. That’s just my view in life, right? That’s why I personally like to eat healthy and to train is because I just don’t do it for fun even though I love it, I also do it because I think it helps me compete, and that’s kind of the team mentality I have of the team. If we wanna be set up for success then these other conditions have to be met. People have to make sure they take care of themselves and sleep and food and things like that and I can’t force people to do it but I am gonna try to encourage it.”

Fly and his teammates are currently in Bucharest, Romania, strategizing for The International 10 (TI10). The Dota 2 event, which features more than a $40 million USD prize pool, is set to begin on 7th Oct 2021. Evil Geniuses is pegged as one of the favorites to win the tournament.
