The Dota 2 "Abandon" bug, which causes players to accidentally quit an ongoing game, still exists in the game despite numerous reports of it in the past. Recently, the incident allegedly took place during BTS Pro Series S8: Americas' game two between D2 Hustlers and 4Gringos. As a result of this bug, Yuma Benjamin Langlet "Yuma" Muckenhirn of the D2 Hustlers, could not reconnect to the game after he had disconnected, so his team called 'GG' at 18 minutes even though the networth was equal between the two teams. In the wake of this recurrent bug, D2 Hustlers' player, Cedric "Davai Lama" Deckmyn then took to Twitter to lambast Valve for its inability to fix it.

Davai Lama tweeted that his team, D2 Hustlers, was having problems because of this "Abandon" bug. Exasperated, he asked Valve to fix it before it ruins more games.

In the game against 4Gringos, the admin stated that they had no choice but to continue the game after D2 Hustlers’ pause time would end. A remake was not possible. D2 Hustlers preferred not to continue with the 4v5 match at that point and typed 'GG' to end it.

Sometimes, players may experience the "Abandon" bug when disconnecting from a game and then attempting to restart it afterward. Once you click the "Red Power" option in the top right corner of the screen after you have disconnected from a game, you should ideally see the "Quit Game" option, allowing you to close the game window. However, if you are unlucky enough to encounter this bug, instead of the "Quit Game" option, you will see the "Yes, Abandon Game" option. Players tend to click on it quickly out of habit, forcing them to quit the game.

Previous instances of the “Abandon Bug”

The bug dates back to April 2021, more than a year ago. Dota 2 commentator and streamer, Troels "syndereN" Nielsen, had been a victim of this bug then.

The bug has also been cited as the reason Rodrigo "Lelis" Santos of Quincy Crew abandoned a game against CR4ZY in August 2020 and Albert "eine" Garaev of Gambit Esports abandoned a game against Ninjas in Pyjamas in November 2020.

Janne "Gorgc" Stefanovski, a popular Dota 2 streamer, encountered this bug a couple of times during his Twitch livestream in July 2021. Although he had fallen victim to it the first time, he was more careful the second time and avoided abandoning the game.

It is intriguing to see Valve's inability to address a bug over such a lengthy period of time. Many in the community have highlighted a case where this bug would appear in a The International (TI) match and create a lot of issues.
