Garena just announced a new tournament earlier today, titled the ‘Free Fire Continental Series 2020’ (FFCS). It will be a series of three online international competitions that will happen simultaneously in the Americas, Asia, and EMEA. This tournament fills in for the Free Fire World Series 2020 that was supposed to happen in Brazil this year. However, the event was cancelled due to the global lockdown restrictions.
Format and other details about Free Fire Continental Series 2020
The FFCS will take place in six matches on the Battle Royale maps Bermuda, Purgatory, and Kalahari. It is set to have a total prize pool of $300,000 for each regional tournament.
This tournament begins simultaneously in all three regions on 21st November. The finals of the Free Fire Continental Series 2020 will take place on 28th and 29th November. Players from Brazil and Latin Americas regions will compete in the Americas Series. Players from Europe, Russia, the Middle East, and North Africa will compete in EMEA, and players from Chinese Taipei, India, Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, and Vietnam will compete in the Asia Series.
The Free Fire Continental Series 2020 follows into the footsteps of the Free Fire World Series which took place last year. The Free Fire World Series 2019 finals were hosted in Brazil and saw the victory of Brazilian team Corinthians. The Corinthians drew a lot of attention from big international teams like Team Liquid that announced a Free Fire squad right after. The tournament also drew a lot of eyes, with a peak of over one million viewers. The 2020 edition was scheduled to be much larger but ended up cancelled as many international tournaments due to the global restrictions. Free Fire Continental Series 2020 was introduced to replace it.
This tournament is one among the many attempts made by Garena to continue engaging with its fan base in these difficult times. As many smaller regional tournaments since March have taken place, it seems that Garena is now betting on something bigger.
It seems interesting that Garena has made a division of 3 different parts for the Free Fire Continental Series 2020, compared to PUBG Mobile’s way of doing East and West. While part of it comes from the concern for internet issues that will prolong were things done PUBG Mobile’s way, we should also keep in mind how the playerbases for both these games are divided differently across the continent. PUBG Mobile has a concentration in North America and Europe in the West while the East is more scattered with players coming from Pakistan to Japan. However, Free Fire has seen players mostly come from Brazil and Latin America which will certainly make clubbing them with European players a challenge for the Free Fire Continental Series 2020 had they done the East-West format.
