- Free Fire shows record high number of players during second quarter of 2020.
- The game is steadily climbing to the top of the charts and has shown consistent growth in revenue and player base over the last year.
Sea limited, the parent company behind Garena Free Fire has recently released a report talking about their performance in quarter 2 of 2020. While the entire world is reeling from economic setbacks brought about by the ongoing global pandemic, gaming and in particular, mobile gaming has consistently shown strong numbers. Of course part of this is due to the fact that traditional sources of entertainment such as sports and films have been on a hiatus and entirely new sets of people have discovered mobile gaming to be a new form of entertainment in these times.
Over 100M Peak Daily Active Users in Free Fire
The report says that Garena Free Fire saw a record number of players during the second quarter, with over 100 million peak daily active users in the game. According to app data and analytics firm, App Annie, Free Fire was also the third most downloaded app in the games category and the highest grossing mobile game in Latin America and Southeast Asia. The Sea Limited report also states, “In July 2020, Garena hit a new record high in monthly adjusted revenue. Free Fire also achieved a new record in monthly paying users in July, which more than doubled year-on-year.”
Free Fire continues to grow across mobile first regions such as Southeast Asia and South America and has already become one of if not the top title in these regions. With 100 million + peak daily active users, its very likely that the game has a larger player base than some of the more well recognized titles in the genre such as PUBG MOBILE and Call of Duty: Mobile. The fact that Free Fire has managed to do this in such a short amount of time is nothing short of impressive.
Collaborations with mainstream celebrities and artists such as DJ Alok is one of the key drivers behind the game's popularity. More recently, Free Fire announced a collaboration with popular Netflix show, Money Heist and are set to release themed in-game items in September. The title has also been actively working to release content in the form of digital advertisements, music videos and other such endeavors.
In esports, the recently concluded Free Fire All Stars Asia Championship has now been watched over 20 million times. In the second quarter Free Fire esport streams across all platforms and streams clocked over 120 million views as per the report.
