PUBG Developer Appoints Sean Hyunil Sohn as CEO of Krafton India

Former PUBG Corporation CFO, Sean (Hyunil) Sohn has been appointed as the CEO at PUBG India and Head of India Division at Krafton.
Sohn will be overseeing operations for Krafton Inc. and representing Krafton's Indian subsidiary, 'PUBG India'.
Krafton Inc. is behind the largely popular mobile esports title Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI).

Sean Hyunil Sohn, the former Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of PUBG Corporation, has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Krafton India. Sohn will be joining the India division in Bangalore to oversee operations for Krafton Inc. and he will be representing Krafton’s India subsidiary 'PUBG India'. Krafton Inc. is behind successful mobile esports title, Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), which has crossed 50 million downloads despite being an India-exclusive title.

What Sohn’s arrival in India means for BGMI and Krafton India

Sohn joined PUBG Corporation as CFO in 2017 and following the merger of PUBG Corporation and Krafton in 2020, he served as the head of the investment division. Upon being appointed as the CEO of Krafton India and the head of India Division at Krafton, According to South Korean media portal Naver, he said that the Indian gaming market is "at the beginning of its development stages" and it has the potential to expand and grow due to the user interest here. He sees India as a “market of opportunity” and wants to expand Krafton’s IP and gaming experiences to other countries.

After establishing its Indian subsidiary, Krafton has been targeting the Indian market by launching Battlegrounds Mobile India and creating an esports ecosystem in the region. Sohn revealed that Krafton has invested $70 million USD in the market this year alone.

Krafton's recent IPO listing was anticipated to raise up to $3.8 billion USD. Currently, the company's founder, Chang Byung-gyu is the largest shareholder of the company with a 16.4% stake as of end-2020, followed by China's Tencent, holding a 15.5% stake through an investment company. Small shareholders with less than 1% stake individually held a combined 23.2% of Krafton.

Battlegrounds Mobile India has just launched on iOS and Krafton Inc. is gearing up to bolster the game’s esports community with region-exclusive events and by partnering with stakeholders in the Indian esports industry. Sohn will be looking to replicate the success of PUBG and PUBG Mobile, which are among the highest grossing games of all time.
