The popular turn-based strategy game, Axie Infinity, announced that it’s planning to venture into the esports scene. Sky Mavis, the developer behind the popular game, stated that they are rolling out a dedicated esports server for the game and are committing as much as 5,000 ($145,450 USD) Axie Infinity Shards (AXS), an in-game currency that can also be converted to real money, as the prize pool for the upcoming esports tournaments. Axie Infinity is currently accepting proposals from 15th - 29th July from community tournament organizers and will reveal a schedule for the selected events over the course of 2021.

Axie Infinity will reveal esports tournaments in 2021

Axie Infinity is a turn-based strategy game where you collect monsters known as Axies to fight with you in the arena. The game uses Ethereum-based cryptocurrency, AXS and Small Love Potion (SLP) as in-game currency which can also be converted into real money.

Through a blog post posted on 16th July 2021, Sky Mavis has revealed that they are planning to release a dedicated esports server for their popular turn-based strategy game, Axie Infinity. The devs stated that with the massive growth of the game, gaming communities have started hosting their own esports events which actually caused them several problems. Due to the massive amount of community-run events, Sky Mavis had to temporarily close and improve the games Challenge server that is usually available for scrimmages and tournament matches.

Axie Esports Grants Program

More community members have been stepping up to organize their own, grass-roots events; and similarly, we've had more requests for event sponsorship than ever before. However, this amazing growth has created some new challenges when it comes to scaling our game servers. As a result, the challenge server that is usually available for scrimmages and tournament matches has been offline,” stated the devs.

The devs behind Axie Infinity will be releasing a dedicated esports server for the game in the near future and will improve the scaling to provide a much more stable server for future esports events.

To celebrate the release of the new dedicated esports server, Axie Infinity will commit a total of 5,000 ($145,450 USD) Axie Infinity Shards (AXS), an in-game currency that can be converted to real money, as the prize pool for the community tournaments that will be held in 2021.

Community event organizers can send their proposals until 29th July 2021 and get a chance to get sponsored by Axie Infinity. The proposed events should only take place between 6th August - 30th Nov 2021. Interested parties can submit their entries on the link provided.

The proposal should contain the following;

  • Scheduling details like dates, times, number of days, duration.

  • Format details like open vs invitational, bracket type, platform.

  • Prize pool request and distribution strategy.

  • Information on any other sponsors or event partners.

  • Logistical information about administration plan and event operations.

  • Broadcast plan, which languages, which channels, who's casting.

  • Viewership estimates, entry estimates, unique elements.

  • Marketing strategy, social media, how will people know about your event?

  • What are the key factors that will make your event successful?

  • What other events or tournaments have you successfully run in the past?

Other considerations:

  • Sometimes less is more; focus on short, executable events rather than long leagues.

  • Don't try to do too much with every event; focus on delivering the highest possible quality, instead of the largest possible scope.

  • You're welcome to submit multiple events or dates, but our goal is to spread the support to multiple organizers.

  • Date ranges are great! We will do our best to meet specific date requests where we can, but prepare to be flexible when it comes to scheduling!

However, there are limitations to the dedicated esports server.

  • The esports server will require whitelisting to get access.

  • This means that for each tournament, we will require the event organizer to submit a finalized list of all participants and their Axie account email addresses no less than 24 hours before the event starts.

  • Failure to submit a full list of participants could result in some players not having access to the server.

  • Due to the manual nature of this whitelisting process, we encourage all tournament organizers to consider ways to limit the scope of their events by region, time zone, rating, or any other relevant metric.

According to the devs, all proposals will be reviewed on 6th Aug 2021 and a master schedule will be revealed within the next four months. Axie Infinity is hoping to host a total of 10 esports events during this four-month period. Sky Mavis clarified that not all of the proposals will be accepted but there will be more opportunities in the future.
