The Esports Mobile Game of the Year Finalists Announced for Esports Awards 2021

The Esports Awards 2021 announced the nominations for a few categories yesterday on May 27 which included the finalists for ‘The Esports Mobile Game of the Year’. This category along with ‘The Esports Mobile Player of the Year’ was introduced just last year to the Esports Awards, making them one of the latest verticals to be added. The Esports Mobile Game of the Year 2020 was awarded to Free Fire, a battle royale for mobile devices published by Garena. This year once again the competition is looking tough between the shortlisted mobile titles which range across multiple genres from FPS (First Person Shooter), Battle Royale, MOBA (Massive Online Battle Arena), and more.

This year also eight mobile titles have been shortlisted under the category of ‘The Esports Mobile Game of the Year’. When compared to the previous year’s list we observe that almost all the titles are the same, with the exception of League of Legends Wild Rift that replaces Clash of Clans. The complete list is as follows,

• Call of Duty: Mobile
• PUBG Mobile
• Free Fire
• Clash Royale
• Mobile Legends: Bang Bang
• Arena of Valor
• Brawl Stars
• League of Legends: Wild Rift

Talking a quick look at the shortlisted mobile games, it is enough to realize that deciding a winner is going to be really tough between a few titles. As the selection process takes into consideration 25% of the final public votes, PUBG Mobile might face a tough time winning this category considering that the battle royale got banned within India around September last year.

With the game completely being replaced by Battlegrounds Mobile India which is on the brink of its release within the country, the Indian mobile gaming community which was PUBG Mobile’s biggest audience might not support the game wholeheartedly.

On the other hand, Free Fire which is already a huge title in Southeast Asia and Latin America was able to capture a huge chunk of the Indian market in the last 8 to 9 months. According to the latest quarterly report released by Garena’s parent company Sea Limited, Free Fire was the highest-grossing game across all the regions listed above.

Call of Duty: Mobile is still considered to be a smaller title when compared to PUBGM and Free Fire. However, as 75% of the decision making power lies with the selected panel members there is always a chance for a slightly smaller title with a good amount of votes to win the category.

The MOBA titles like AOV, MLBB, and Wild Rift are also capable of giving stiff competition to the other titles, but the same cannot be said for the remaining two games Brawl Stars and Clash Royale. Though the competitive scene of the latter is quite robust, giving away decent prize pools, a fair amount of viewership, and plenty of high-level players, the game being a tower defence might not appeal to a large section of gamers.

It will surely be exciting to see which mobile game receives the title of ‘The Esports Mobile Game of the Year’ for Esports Awards 2021.
