Will Call of Duty Mobile Be Removed After Warzone Mobile Launches?

As the launch of Warzone Mobile draws closer, fans of Call of Duty Mobile are left wondering what will happen to the game. Released in October 2019, Call of Duty Mobile has been the franchise’s standalone mobile title so far. However, with Warzone Mobile set to release in Spring 2024, Microsoft has other plans for Call of Duty: Mobile. Let’s look at what Warzone Mobile’s release will mean for the long-running title and whether Call of Duty Mobile will be removed.

Microsoft confirms Call of Duty Mobile will be phased out eventually

Microsoft have confirmed that Call of Duty Mobile will be superseded by Warzone Mobile, and be phased out once the latter releases. According to Charlie INTEL, Microsoft is planning to phase out Call of Duty: Mobile after the release of Warzone Mobile. A tweet includes a text document stating, “CoD: Mobile was developed and is owned by TiMi Studios, a subsidiary of Tencent. Any spinout of the game would therefore [Redacted]. CoD: Mobile is expected to be phased out over time (outside of China) with the launch of Warzone Mobile.”

The information is pulled directly from a response given by Microsoft to the Competition and Markets Authority of the UK as part of its efforts to close a $68.7 billion deal to acquire Activision. The UK Competition and Markets Authority previously blocked Microsoft's attempts to buy Activision Blizzard, forcing Microsoft to reorganize the deal.

As of writing, there has been no official confirmation from Activision regarding this. As Stephen Totilo of Axios notes, Warzone Mobile is being developed by Activision and will be tied to their PC series and console, with cross-progression also coming to the game. Meanwhile, Call of Duty: Mobile operates more like a standalone title. It is also owned and operated by Tencent’s TiMi Studios. 

The decision to phase out Call of Duty: Mobile seems largely about bringing development in-house, relying less on third-party developers. However, Call of Duty Mobile fans are undoubtedly upset about the game’s closure and uncertain about what will happen to their accounts and their items.

Fans and content creators alike, echo this sentiment.

Fans are also hoping that Activision gives them a refund.

According to Sensor Tower, the game crossed $1.5 billion in global lifetime player spending across the App Store and Google Play in 2021. There has been no official word on whether or not players will get a refund on their many purchases over the years.
