Ever since its release in April 2023, Honkai: Star Rail by Hoyoverse has taken the role-playing game (RPG) community by storm. This adventure game follows Honkai Impact 3rd and hence players will find similar characters in this title. If you have been looking to get started with Honkai: Star Rail, one of the biggest questions you might have is whether the game has multiplayer modes to play with friends. It is noteworthy that multiplayer in Honkai: Star Rail is slightly different from other games and the way it works is a bit limited.
Here’s all you need to know about multiplayer in the game.
Does Honkai: Star Rail have multiplayer or co-op modes?
The answer to the question of ‘Does Honkai: Star Rail have multiplayer or co-op modes?’ is a complicated one. It is a mix of both yes and no. While, like in a multiplayer game, you can add friends inside the game, but you cannot join your friends’ game like in Genshin Impact. This system might be confusing and misleading from the outside but it is perfectly explainable. Despite not being able to join your friends, adding them to your list will help you take advantage of their support characters.
On the contrary, in Genshin Impact, you can play in the co-op mode, allowing you to make friends and enter their worlds. Together with your friends, you can grind domains for artifacts and materials, fight bosses, and complete puzzles.
Coming back to Honkai: Star Rail, you can use one of your friends’ Support Characters as a temporary member of your party. However, note that this support character can only be borrowed for use in Calyxes and Caverns of Corrosion in Honkai.
Calyxes are challenges where players can acquire various items and materials such as Trailblaze exp, Character exp Material, Light Cone Exp Material, Trace Material, and others in return for Trailblaze Power. They are open daily and require Trailblaze Power ×10 for each wave of enemies. Meanwhile, Cavern of Corrosion is a challenge by which players can acquire Cavern Relics. They are open daily and require Trailblaze Power ×40 to challenge.
Note that you cannot expect to use the support of a friend who is of a higher level. The support’s character levels are adjusted to your level once you pick them. While it may seem like a disadvantage, it really helps you and your friends since borrowing a Support Character gives credits to your friends and you receive timely help for your team.
Additionally, remember that you cannot borrow a Support Character that is already in your team.
