According to new rumors, your PlayStation 5 console might possibly support classic PlayStation 1, 2, and even games made for the PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld. This information comes from the LinkedIn page of Implicit Conversions, an emulation studio that mentioned their supposed partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment / PlayStation to bring these games to the current-gen console and even the older PlayStation 4.
However, the statement was soon retracted by the Emulation company, changing it to “We are working with clients to bring NES, PS1, PSP, and PS2 games to the PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox.” Let’s delve into it and see what the fuss is all about.
Implicit Conversions Is Currently Working to Bring Playstation 1 Games to the PS5
In a recent feature with Time Extension, the CEO of Implicit Conversions Robin Lavallée shares details about the company and its current projects. Lavallée is an ex-Ubisoft employee who worked on many of the studio’s popular franchises like Hearthstone, Prince of Persia, and more, before teaming up with Co-founder and CTO, Jake Stine in 2019, who worked on PCSX2, a well-known emulator for the PlayStation 2.
Stine had also moved on from PCSX2 and became an employee of PlayStation to bring PS2 titles to the PlayStation 4. With their industry knowledge and expertise, they have developed their SYRUP engine, which will allow developers to interface retro games with modern consoles like the PlayStation 5 and the Nintendo Switch.
Syrup is an advanced emulation engine that aims to bring retro games running on 8, 16, and 32-bit architectures to modern consoles. It is capable of handling aspects like display, audio, controls, network, and even additional features like Trophies by encompassing multiple emulators modified to run as lightweight plugins.
Implicit Conversions has already brought over 60 PlayStation games like Twisted Metal, Tekken 2, Resident Evil, The Legend of Dragoon, Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny, Ape Escape, and more for Sony’s PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers as part of their Classics catalog. Although they have retracted their statement of focusing on bringing the iconic 6th gen PlayStation 2 titles, numerous fans are glimmering with hope, expecting to relive the nostalgia on the PlayStation 5.
While these rumors seem promising, you need to keep in mind that the team has retracted their statement, denying their active involvement in the emulation of PS2 games. Besides that, there has been no official confirmation from Sony or PlayStation regarding any of the titles in development, so please take this information with a grain of salt.
