At CES 2024, Sony took to the stage to announce updates on new projects, including upcoming adaptations of PlayStation's properties.
Sony has confirmed that the writing is officially underway for the God of War series being developed by Amazon Prime Video.

Sony’s CES 2024 press conference delivered big if you’re a fan of the God of War series. Katherine Pope, President of Sony Pictures Television Studio, confirmed early in the conference that writing was underway for the God of War series coming to Amazon Prime streaming service.

God of War Series is Coming to Amazon Prime

Game adaptations have had quite a rocky relationship with both critics and fans in the past, but more recently, the genre has been thriving. After the incredible success of HBO’s The Last of Us, the doors have been opened for shows like Tomb Raider, Bioshock, and even Borderlands. However, one upcoming show that has die-hard video game fans excited is the new God of War Series, set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video.

At CES 2024, Sony championed the success of its game adaptations. Last year, the company released its adaptations of The Last of Us on HBO and Twisted Metal on Peacock, in addition to its Gran Turismo Film. The projects have been a massive success for the entertainment giant; HBO’s The Last of Us pulled more than 22 million domestic viewers. However, they’re not planning to slow down any time soon. Sony has confirmed that the writing for the upcoming God of War adaption on Amazon Prime Video has started, as has writing for the Horizon Zero Dawn adaptation coming to Netflix.

God of War Amazon Prime Series Release Date and Plot

Unfortunately, Sony has not given us a release date for the God of War series. With the writing just starting, fans can expect to wait at least a little while for Kratos to hit our screen. Perhaps a safe bet might be towards the end of 2026. Officially, the plot will begin in the Norse Saga of the Franchise, a.k.a. God of War (2018). Beginning the story with Norse Saga would mean the story will follow Kratos and his son Atreus going through the Nine Realms of Norse mythology and against the game’s main antagonist, Baldur.

However, that doesn’t mean the series will stick to how the story plays out in the video game. With eight games in the franchise spanning over two timelines with completely different mythologies, the writers have a lot of freedom for the upcoming God of War series. Casting has yet to be announced for the series, but that hasn’t stopped fans of the franchise from speculating about the likes of Jason Momoa and Dwayne Johnson making appearances in the Amazon Prime series. However, there’s one man who has made his interest crystal clear for the role and has the best chance at the part so far: the in-game voice actor of Kratos, Christopher Judge.

Hopefully, now that writing is underway, we’ll start to hear more about directors for episodes and possible castings for various roles in the series.

The God of War series, spanning eight titles, is known for portraying Kratos' descent into revenge and Greek mythology. The series has amassed millions since its debut. It’s one of the most popular and influential titles in the gaming world
