The PSP-like handheld is set to be launched by mid to late November 2023.

Sony’s May showcase event featured several innovative ideas and game titles, leaving Sony fans in awe. One of the standout announcements was for the handheld gaming console  “Project Q” which will allow PlayStation 5 games to be streamed on the go. This new handheld is said to feature an 8-inch touch screen with a split DualSense controller attached to either side. The device will not feature cloud gaming but it is said to rely on remote play functionality that will allow you to play famous PlayStation titles on the go. However, there are several leaked images and video clips floating around on the internet, showcasing this device running on Android.

Sony’s Project Q

With Project Q, Sony attempts to dip its feet into the handheld console market again, which was once dominated by the iconic PlayStation Portable. Here’s a short video from Sony’s official May showcase event that gives us a glimpse of the device.

After the event, The CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan said “We will launch a dedicated device that enables you to stream any game from your PS5 console using Remote Play over Wi-Fi, Internally known as ‘Project Q,’ it has an 8-inch HD screen and all of the buttons and features of the DualSense wireless controller.”

In addition to this, Zuby_Tech has posted several images and a video showcasing the project Q handheld on Twitter.

What comes as a surprise is that the device featured in the Twitter clip shows a prototype version of the UI and it is running Android. The device has the three navigation buttons featured on Android devices. This might be possible due to Sony’s recent talks with Qualcomm, the semiconductor manufacturing giant. Although official information leads to a handheld device that would simply act as an accessory to the PS5, these leaks seem to show a potential cloud gaming device.

It is clear that Sony is attempting to take its share from the Handheld gaming market. With Nintendo Switch dominating the market along with the newest release of the Steam Deck, Sony’s decision to bring a handheld device is no surprise, considering they were once the pioneers in this market with the PSP being a massive hit among gamers.
