While no other details have been revealed, we can be sure that the upcoming game will improve upon the gameplay and open-world level design of Sonic Frontiers.
Sonic Frontiers is the highest-selling 3D Sonic game in the franchise, with over 3.5 million copies sold as of May 2023.

With the release of Sonic Frontiers in November 2022, Sega took its critically acclaimed franchise in a new direction by integrating open-world adventure elements into the traditional platformer. The game sold a massive 3.5 million copies across all platforms by May 2023, making it the best-selling 3D Sonic game ever made.

Following its success, Takashi Lizuka, the head of the Sonic team, mentioned that Frontiers would be the model for future Sonic games. This statement appears to be true, as rumors from multiple sources claim that Sonic Frontiers 2 is indeed under development.

Sonic Frontiers 2 Leak Comes From DanielRPK and Midori

The information regarding the development of Sonic Frontiers 2 initially came from DanielRPK’s post on Patreon. For those unaware, DanielRPK has a good track record of accurately reporting on many Marvel movies. Although many Sonic fans questioned his credibility on the matter, this information spread through various social media platforms like wildfire.

While some fans of the franchise still remained skeptical, this rumor was soon corroborated by reliable Sega leaker Midori, who has correctly predicted numerous Sonic and Persona games in the past. Besides stating that it is indeed correct information, she also added that while the upcoming game might be a successor to Sonic Frontiers in terms of gameplay, it might be revealed under a new name. This is because Frontiers was initially titled “Rangers” before its announcement.

This goes in line with the words of Morio Kishimoto, the director of Sega’s Sonic dev team, who has openly mentioned that Sonic Frontiers would be the blueprint for upcoming games in the series. This is a welcomed decision among fans who hope that the upcoming game will improve upon the established gameplay mechanics and level design in Frontiers.

While no other details regarding the game’s development or release date were revealed, this has certainly excited long-term Sonic fans who are eager to witness the evolution of the 3D Sonic games. Similar to the previous entry, we can expect Frontiers 2 to be available on current-gen consoles like the PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, along with PC. As always, this rumor has not been officially acknowledged by Sega so please take it with a grain of salt.
