NetEase Games Reportedly Developing a AAA First-Person Shooter Called Marvel Rivals
An official announcement is expected this year
According to recent rumors, Chinese Game Developer NetEase is supposedly working on a AAA title for Marvel dubbed “Marvel Rivals”. This is expected to be a multiplayer first-person mobile shooter whose events will be a part of Marvel’s universe, however, other details regarding the game seem to be pretty scarce.
This rumor first originated back in 2019, from a recruitment post on LinkedIn, where an unnamed studio posted a job listing for the position of Lead Level Designer for Marvel Universe’s IP. The company’s location was mentioned as Guangzhou, China, which is where NetEase Games’ headquarters was established. Without further ado, here’s everything we know so far.
Marvel Rivals Announcement Expected by End of 2024, Leaker Predicted Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra
While news of this game’s development was first reported by MMOCulture in 2019, a new rumor has come from @Kurakasis, who accurately predicted the title of the upcoming action-adventure game Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra before it was unveiled. While this game featuring Captain America and Black Panther has a 2025 release year, Marvel Rivals, which has presumably been in development for around five years has not yet been announced.
Marvel has released multiple AAA titles in the last decade with Marvel’s Spider-Man 1 and 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy being the most popular games of recent times. While fans are already waiting for Rise of Hydra, Blade, and Wolverine, the announcement of Marvel Rivals would surely be delightful news, especially for mobile gamers, as it will predominantly be available for iOS and Android devices.
Although Kurakasis mentions in the aforementioned tweet that Rivals will be available on all PC, mobile, and consoles, they have followed up their post, stating that they cannot guarantee that this Marvel FPS project is for all platforms, as there may be another NetEase developed Marvel project that they are not aware of. Although this sounds exciting, it seems unlikely that another project is in the works, considering that the Marvel Rivals has not yet been announced after half a decade.
However, this would definitely not be the first Marvel project developed by NetEase, as the well-known developer has already published an MMO called Marvel Super War in 2019, followed by Marvel Duel in 2023 for select regions. If Marvel Rivals does indeed turn out to be an FPS, it would certainly be a new genre that the company is tapping into, although its mechanics and gameplay on a touchscreen device still remain questionable.
