Highlights
Entering the brutal yet lucrative Nether realm requires you to build a portal that allows interdimensional travel.
One of the most efficient ways to build a Nether Portal requires just 10 Obsidian blocks.
You may also encounter ruined Nether portals in your world, which make the job a whole lot easier.

Minecraft allows you to experience two different dimensions; the first being your current world while the latter being a more dark and devious realm filled with lava, hostile creatures, and bizarre biomes. Although the initial world contains plenty of things to explore, the Nether dimension takes it further, as dealing with the added difficulty leads to numerous lucrative resources.

That being said, entering this hellish dimension requires you to obtain certain materials and build a Nether portal that allows interdimensional traversal. If you are a new player who is learning the ropes of Minecraft, here’s how you can easily build one.

How to Build a Nether Portal in Minecraft?

Before building a portal to the other dimension, you will need to acquire certain materials that will help you embark on your journey. These are:

  • At least 10 blocks of Obsidian

  • Diamond or Netherite Pickaxe

  • Flint and Steel

  • A nearby Lava source

  • One empty bucket

  • One water bucket

  • Dirt blocks

Creating Obsidian

Although most of these items can be easily obtained, getting access to the Obsidian ore can be a daunting task if you are just getting started with the game. You will find this block mostly in lava caves below the ground. If you are unable to find it, you can use the aforementioned materials to create one, provided you have access to a biome with lava.

Creating Obsidian requires you to combine water and lava, which is where the buckets come into play. Breaking a block on the ground, filling it up with lava, and pouring the water on top of it should do the trick. Make sure you collect the water back into the bucket before picking up the Obsidian. Keep in mind that you cannot collect obsidian without a Diamond or a Netherite pickaxe.

Crafting Flint and Steel

This is a pretty straightforward process as the materials required to craft this item are abundant in most worlds. You will need one flint and one Iron Ingot to craft this tool. You can collect flint, simply by breaking gravel, while an Iron Ingot requires you to smelt down an Iron ore.

Building the Nether Portal in Minecraft

A fully functional Nether portal requires you to build either a rectangle or a square out of Obsidian blocks. Its size may vary from 4x5 all the way up to 23x23 blocks to create a massive gateway. However, if you wish to make efficient use of your resources, you can build one by using just 10 blocks.

Nether portal

Follow these simple steps to create a working Nether portal:

  • Set two Obsidian blocks on the ground, preferably on an easy-to-access, flat surface as this will be the location of your portal from now.

  • Place two dirt blocks on either side of the Obsidian blocks

  • Place 3 Obsidian Blocks on each of the dirt blocks

  • Top it off with two more dirt blocks and place the two remaining Obsidian blocks to create a large square.

  • Break the dirt blocks as they are no longer needed to hold the frame of the portal

  • Equip the Flint and Steel from your inventory and right-click on one of the two blocks at the bottom to light it up and activate your Nether portal.

If you are successful with your build, you will see a glowing purple aura in the middle. Jumping into it should take you straight to the hostile world of the Nether. Equip yourself with armor and weapons before you tread into its unforgiving biomes. Although this portal build might not look as aesthetically pleasing as some of the other methods, this is one of the most efficient ways to build one.
