The newly-released Fallout TV series starring Ella Purnell, and Walton Goggins has become a massive success among various demographics, especially among fans of the Bethesda games. Alongside topping the charts in various regions, it has also reached the list of top three mast-watched titles on Amazon Prime Video.
Considering the TV show’s popularity, many new and returning fans have also picked up some of the games, with Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4 even reaching peak player counts on Steam, years after their initial release. New rumors now suggest that the increasing appeal of the existing games has prompted Microsoft Xbox to expedite the development of the next entry, presumably named Fallout 5.
Xbox Wishes to Speed Up Fallout 5’s Development
As mentioned above, Microsoft aims to follow up on the success of the TV show and make sure Fallout 5 is ready to go before losing its relevancy. This rumor originates from Jez Coden, the Managing Editor over on Windows Central who discussed it on The Xbox Two Podcast, right after acknowledging the speculations regarding Helldivers 2 on Xbox.
Corden mentions that the company is well aware of the demand for Fallout, and knows that the next entry in the series will certainly be successful. However, we have to keep in mind that Todd Howard has refrained from mentioning any dates or other details regarding the development of the next Fallout game.
Regardless of Microsoft’s increasing interest in the franchise, remember that Bethesda is currently preoccupied with most of its developers and resources allocated towards developing Elder Scrolls 6, scheduled for early 2026. Additionally, the studio recently released the next-gen patch for Fallout 4 alongside actively working on improving Fallout 76’s experience. Considering all this, the next Fallout game could be years away from us.
While many who are familiar with Bethesda don’t expect Fallout 5 to surface anytime soon, some fans also consider the possibility that Microsoft might hand over its development to another studio, taking it away from Bethesda. The speculation has already begun stating that the Microsoft-owned Obsidian Entertainment, the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas would take responsibility, possibly making Fallout 5 their second game in the franchise.
Although that sounds exciting, you need to know that none of this information has been acknowledged by other credible sources and the current situation indicates that we might have to wait at least until 2030 for the next major Fallout entry, which means that we could possibly see it release directly on the predecessors of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
