However it will not gain its Stamina or HP. Since Ditto counters Dragon-type Pokemon, you might be tempted to put up a Ditto against it. However, Dragon-type Pokemon usually have higher Stamina and Max HP than most Dittos. 

So why should I bother catching and keeping a Ditto?

Despite not being a great choice for battles, you can use Dittos for scouting gyms. Your Ditto will transform into the Pokemon it faces during battle, which is useful for getting information on their movesets, which can help you plan your battle strategy. 

Dittos are also required as part of completing certain research tasks and challenges. You can transform Dittos into other Pokemon, so you don’t have to search for those specific Pokemon in the wild. Catching a Ditto is also part of the quest to get Mew in Pokémon Go. One of the tasks you need to complete during A Mythical Discovery is to catch a Ditto. Also completing a Ditto field research task rewards you 3 rare candies. 

Dittos can also breed with other Pokemon in the main Pokemon games. Niantic shakes things up from time to time, keeping the game fresh. So this feature may be introduced to Pokemon Go sometime in the future. So it is wise to hold on to a Ditto.
