If you have a copy of The Last of Us 2 on PlayStation 4, we have some good news for you. You can upgrade to the PS5 version of the game. Do note that the upgrade is completely free and there are sites out there trying to trick you into purchasing a PS5 version at full price. If you want to upgrade to The Last of Us 2's PS5 version, here's what you need to do.
How to Upgrade The Last of Us 2 for PS5
If you have a digital copy of The Last Of Us 2 on PS4:
Automatic Upgrade: As long as you have your PS4 version downloaded and installed on your PS5, the PS5 upgrade patch (version 1.08) should have downloaded automatically if you have an internet connection. Check your game library to see if you have "The Last of Us Part II Remastered" installed.
Manual Upgrade: If the upgrade didn't happen automatically, you can find it manually on the PlayStation Store. Search for "The Last of Us Part II Remastered" and go to the game hub. Here, you should see an "Upgrade Offer" option. Select it and confirm to download the PS5 version.
If you have a physical disc of The Last Of Us 2 on PS4:
Requirement: You need a PlayStation 5 console with a disc drive to upgrade from a physical disc. The PS5 Digital Edition cannot play PS4 discs.
Upgrade Process: Insert your PS4 disc into the PS5. You should see a prompt on the screen offering to download the PS5 version. Select "Download" and confirm to start the download.
Important Note: You will need to keep the PS4 disc inserted whenever you want to play the PS5 digital version of the game. This is because the disc acts as a verification check to confirm your ownership.
The PS5 upgrade for The Last of Us 2 is free if you already own the PS4 version, regardless of whether it's digital or physical. The PS5 version offers several enhancements, including 4K resolution, 60fps performance, improved textures and lighting, and faster loading times.
The PS5 Remastered version, launching on January 19, 2024, will include all the above enhancements, a new roguelike survival mode called "Factions II," and additional bonus content. You can preorder it now for $10 (local pricing may vary).
