Highlights
NVIDIA DLSS is one of the key features missing from Starfield on PC but it can be modded in.
The mod can provide a massive upgrade to your performance provided you have a PC that is not bottlenecked by your CPU.

Starfield has some amazing visuals but one of the most popular features that is missing from the game is NVIDIA’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), which utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to boost performance by rendering frames at a lower resolution but upscaling them. For example, a game could be rendered at 1080p but upscaled to 4K without losing a noticeable level of quality thanks to Nvidia’s advanced post-processing.

How to install the NVIDIA DLSS mod in Starfield

DLSS helps improve framerates significantly in modern games and the feature is also present in AMD cards via the FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). While FSR 2.0 is present in Starfield, DLSS is missing and if you have an NVIDIA graphics card, you might want to install the feature to boost your performance.

To swap FSR 2.0 with NVIDIA DLSS, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Download the DLSS Mod from: https://www.nexusmods.com/starfield/mods/111

  2. Extract this mod to the game's root folder.

  3. Install Upscaler Base Plugin, place the PDPerfPlugin.dll into mods/UpscalerBasePlugin folder.

  4. You need to download nvngx_dlss.dll or libxess.dll, and place them into mods/UpscalerBasePlugin folder. Check UpscalerBasePlugin's description.

  5. Press END in the game to open the menu for the upscaler, and you can select DLSS or XeSS.

  6. You need to turn on FSR2 in the game's settings, cuz this mod replaces FSR2 with DLSS/XeSS.

  7. The quality levels in-game will not affect anything anymore, you simply change the render scaling ratio in the game's settings.

According to the mod page on Nexus Mods, performance gain depends on how much you are GPU limited, if you don't see any gains it's very normal, you are most likely CPU limited. DLSS is also supported only by NVIDIA’s RTX cards and you will not be able to use the mod with cards that do not have DLSS capabilities.
