The Pokémon Franchise has been around for 26 years, amassing hundreds of pocket monsters.
Keeping track of the total number of Pokémon can be overwhelming, so here's our list of the total number of Pokémon in the franchise.

The Pokémon franchise has come a long way from the original 151 Pokémon featured in Pokémon Red and Blue. With the continual expansion of the Pokémon universe and the addition of more regions, the total number of Pokémon is always on the rise.

If you’re struggling to keep track of how many Pokémon there are in 2023, you’re not alone. It’s hard to keep track with so many pocket monsters releasing. But don’t worry! We’re going to help you find out how many Pokémon are there in the franchise currently.

Total Pokémon Count in 2023

As of September 2023, there are currently 1,017 Pokémon that have appeared throughout the Pokémon video game franchise. This follows the release and addition of new Pokémon with The Teal Mask DLC for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

New Pokémon are not usually introduced in spin-off games like Pokémon Go or Pokémon UNITE; most of the Pokémon originate in the mainline Pokémon games.

Scar and Violet’s launch added 105 new Pokémon, and the franchise surpassed the four-digit mark. Keep in mind that the total number of Pokémon doesn’t include regional variants such as Paldean Wooper and Galarian Weezing, as they don’t have their own Pokedex number.

Total Number of Pokémon Types in 2023

Currently, there are a total of 18 types in the Pokémon franchise. The total number of Pokémon has remained stagnant as compared to the number of Pokémon. Here’s a complete list of Pokémon types-

  • Normal

  • Fighting

  • Flying

  • Poison

  • Ground

  • Rock

  • Bug

  • Ghost

  • Fire

  • Water

  • Grass

  • Electric

  • Psychic

Originally, Red and Blue introduced the franchise’s first 15 types, with three types added in the ensuing generations. The Steel and Dark types were introduced in Generation 2, and the Fairy type debuted in Generation 6. Since then, we haven’t seen any new type additions to the Pokémon Franchise.

Total Number of Legendary Pokemon

We all know that Legendary Pokemon are some of the coolest pocket monsters in the entire Pokemon franchise. They’re the strongest Pokemon with incredible stats and designs. With Scarlet and Violet’s release, the franchise has 66 legendary Pokemon.

However, this number doesn’t include Galarian Articuno, Galarian Moltres, and Galarian Zapdos since they have the same Pokedex number as their original forms and are not considered new Pokemon.

And that’s everything you need to know about how many Pokémon there are in the Pokémon Franchise. Be sure to follow us for more Pokémon news, updates and guides.
