If you are new to video games, you might be taken aback by the number of games available on different devices like PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and other consoles. The easiest, less daunting way to get started on games is to pick up your mobile device and download a few to see what you like best. Most mobile games are available both on Android via the Google Play Store and on the Apple App Store. These games are evergreen and sometimes, you will forget the time pass by as you clear level after level with hours of non-stop gameplay.

You should note that games are not “one size fits all” and there are different video games curated according to the needs and likes of different people. There are fighting games, first-person shooters, high-fantasy ones, casual games, puzzles, single-player, multi-player, and even open-world games that you can explore.

In this article, we shall delve into five easy games that beginners can pick up and master. Playing these games will also let you have a basic grasp of controls and also help you identify which genre of video games suits you.

Why Pick Up Video Games? Is It an Unhealthy Hobby?

There is no doubt that the video game industry is shaking things up in the realm of entertainment and people’s view on gaming is taking a turn for the better. While video games allow you to take complete control of a new world and take on new roles in your universe, they also let you forget your worries for a short period of time.

Games also help you improve some of your cognitive abilities like concentration. A 2022 study by Georgia State University noted that frequent players of video games show superior sensorimotor decision-making skills and enhanced activity in key regions of the brain as compared to non-players. While most of us attribute poor eyesight to increased screen time, a product of playing video games, a 2012 study found that people who play games are able to see more detail, especially in the periphery of their eyesight.

Likewise, by picking up a few video games, you are also able to relate to your friend or sibling who actively plays games. However, it is important to note that anything in excess is bad and even games have to be played with certain checks in mind.

Beginner Games That are Catchy

Here is a list of games that you should try to get a hang of video games. Not all of them fall under the same genre so you can test out different types of games. But the good news is that all of these games can be played for free.

Doodle Jump

The gameplay of Doodle Jump is simple and straightforward. The aim is to guide your main character called the “Doodler”, a four-legged creature up a never-ending series of platforms without falling down. You can get a boost from different objects within the game and you need to avoid certain monsters. You can also shoot these monsters and UFOs or jump on them directly to eliminate them.

While there is no definite end to the gameplay in Doodle Jump, a session comes to an end when you fall down to the bottom of the screen, jump into a monster, get sucked into a black hole, or get abducted by a UFO. This makes a perfect game to play when you are commuting or when you whiling away time.

Temple Run

Temple Run in a way revolutionized mobile games. It is a 3D endless running game where you control an explorer with an ancient relic in his possession and now you have to escape and run away from demonic monkey-like creatures. Notably, there are different characters that you can choose from including Guy Dangerous, Barry Bones, Karma Lee, and more. The game is endless and you will play until your character collides with obstacles, falls into water, or if you are overtaken by the monkeys.

You can tilt your screen to move your character to the left or right and by this movement, you can collect coins and avoid obstacles. If this art style or gameplay does not appeal to you, you can try Subway Surfers which is similar to Temple Run.

Fruit Ninja

Fruit Ninja is a fun, interactive game and even children can pick up on this easily. All you have to do is slice fruits literally and you do this by doing a swift motion on the screen of your device.  You get points for slicing fruits and bonuses are awarded for slicing multiple fruits in one swipe. Remember to stay clear of the bombs. If you slice the bomb, the level ends. You need to slice all fruit you see on screen and if you miss three cumulative fruits, the game will end. Likewise, upon reaching certain scores, you are given an extra life. Notably, Fruit Ninja has three modes: Classic, Zen, and Arcade.

Candy Crush

Candy Crush is yet another simple game that allows you to play mindlessly without worrying too much about strategy or gameplay. Your goal in Candy Crush is to clear as many rows and columns as possible in just a few moves. You clear candy pieces from the board by lining up three or more in a row. To do this, you swap pieces of candy in order to create three of a kind. The major objective of the game is to gain a certain number of points within a certain number of moves. However, as you progress through different levels, you will be tasked with other objectives like reaching a certain score within a time frame or clearing candies of one particular color.

Notably, when you successfully win a game in Candy Crush Sage, you unlock the next level along with other perks and boosts. But when you lose, the level you are currently in is reset and you will also lose a life. Players should be mindful that life will regenerate automatically every 30 minutes or so and you will only have five lives at once.

Plants vs Zombies

Plants vs Zombies is a game in the tower defense genre and players have to defend their homes from zombies. Basically, the lawn is divided into a grid, with your house to the left. You need to place different types of plants on these squares and every plant has a unique style of defense like shooting, exploding, and blocking. Likewise, the zombies also have different types and they have their own special behaviors and weaknesses to different plants. At the start of every level, the player is shown what types of zombies will appear in that and they choose a combination of plants to combat them.

If you have a relatively recent smartphone or tablet, you can download plenty of amazing games to play from the App Store or Google Play. As a beginner, all you need to know is to steer clear of high-octane, action games for now, since most of them require you to master the control of different buttons. Games like Candy Crush Saga or Temple Run, give you the same adrenaline rush while also allowing you to game at ease.
