Psyonix’s Rocket League launched six years ago in July 2015 and continues to pull in big numbers in July 2021. Data compiled from several sources (including Statista) by activeplayer.io indicates that Rocket League had an average of 99.5 million players in the last 30 days with 7.3 million max players in a day. Activeplayer.io reported an average of 95.9 million players during June 2021, a 2% increase from May 2021. Player numbers seem to be consistently increasing by a tiny percentage since the start of 2021. Over the past five years, over 40 million players have downloaded the game.
Major Developments for Rocket League and Impact on Player Count
Rocket League had 95.9 million average users in June 2021 according to activeplayer.io. In March 2021, Steam Charts had reported 82,417 people were online in Rocket League which is remarkable considering that Epic discontinued sales on Valve’s store after taking over Psyonix in September 2020. Players can now only download the PC version of Rocket League from the Epic Games Store. The game officially crossed 1 million simultaneous online players in September last year. Epic also revealed that the game had topped 75 million players in total, however there was no mention of the number of active accounts.
The average player count for the game had been going up by a small amount over the past few months up to this point. It had previous successes with being free, as a PlayStation Plus giveaway in 2016 led to over five million downloads.
In May 2020, Rocket League player count saw a whopping 27% spike in monthly users with an average of 81.9 million players, which coincided with the Modes of May limited time modes event. However, immediately next month (April 2020) the game saw a 13% drop in player count.
Unfortunately, there isn’t an easy way to calculate Rocket League's player counts by hardware ownership. Console developers are reluctant to release the numbers. With that said, one can say that Rocket League is still doing well, with plenty of players queuing up to smash cars into each other and a large metallic ball regardless of platform. This can be attributed to Rocket League’s fun yet challenging gameplay and a dedicated community.
