Riot Games released its usual Dev Update featuring developers Jeremy “Brightmoon” Lee and Andrei “Meddler” van Roonon 28th August. Titled "Preseason & Ranked Changes," the developers presented some big changes they have in store for Season 2024 next year. It includes having three ranked resets per year, and one of the biggest preseason changes is that Riot Games is completely scrapping the Mythic Items from League of Legends.
Here's all we know about when the Mythic items will be sunset and why Riot Games took this decision.
Riot Games to Sunset Mythic Items in League of Legends
League of Legends Game Director Pu Lui addressed the upcoming preseason changes along with the updates to ranked and other systems. The biggest change that is coming players' way is the overhaul of the Mythic items in League of Legends.
If you have been playing the game, you will know how your champion is restricted to only one Mythic item and how it dictates your whole build, curbing creativity.
The Mythic items system in the game has been one of the most divisive things and many players have had differing opinions on it. Riot Games has previously acknowledged this and introduced many changes to see how the Mythic items resonate. However, they have been not so great.
On these lines, Lui said, “Earlier this year we said we weren’t really happy with how Mythic Items landed and that we were open to removing the system entirely if the changes implemented didn’t bring us closer to where we wanted to be. Well, they didn’t. So starting in January of 2023, Mythic Items will be removed from League of Legends.”
Pu Lui also added that the item system failed to meet the expectation and needs of champions hailing from different classes and roles and that it proved to be too challenging. He noted that while the Mythic items worked for almost half of the League of Legends champions, the other half of the roster do not have the right items to build and most players feel that their creativity is curbed in those scenarios.
However, players should note that only the Mythic item tier would be removed and Riot Games will be adjusting current Mythics that players really like to be "exciting options rather than prescriptive centerpieces."
This means that players will have the leeway to buy old school item combinations like Infinity Edge with Trinity Force.
Riot Games also noted that it will be doing a full reveal of all the preseason changes very soon and there will be detailed section for the items.
