The offseason roster mania in League of Legends esports is in full swing with organizations eyeing to rope in star players to round out their squads. Pro players and teams usually discuss their buyout situations and announce their moves during this season and unsurprisingly, we’ve already had a string of rumors and reports. One of the biggest attack-damage carries (ADC) in the esport, Karmine Corp (KCorp) player Martin “Rekkles” Larsson delved deep into the issues he faced after G2 Esports benched him and empathized with jungler Marcin "Jankos" Jankowski, who recently parted ways with G2 Esports. Rekkles revealed that Jankos was getting the same treatment that he received last year around this time.

Rekkles talks about Jankos’ situation with G2 Esports

G2’s jungler Marcin "Jankos" Jankowski confirmed on 22nd October that he was leaving the team. This was after G2 Esports promises to build a stronger roster for the 2023 season after its disappointing showing at Worlds 2022. On a recent stream, a viewer asked Rekkles if he and Jankos were having the same problems during the off-season. To this, Rekkles replied, “I can imagine Jankos having very similar problems to me, last year [around this time]. I can imagine him going through the exact same sh** I went through.” He then added that he saw a clip of Jankos where he was asked if he could be a substitute player or fight for his spot and that he raised the same question to G2 Esports last year when he was benched.

When they benched me, I asked them if I can just fight for my spot, or if I can 50% of the money that I had on my contract and give the other 50% to the other player and just be a six-man roster. Be a sub, not even play, just be in the house and try to get that chance eventually. But none of this was an option,” Rekkles stated.

Additionally, Rekkles was smothered by a clause in his contract with G2 that said he could be paid six percent (minimum wage) of his salary if he was benched.

Rekkles considering role-swapping to support

In the livestream, Rekkles also talked about how his G2 Esports contract has had its repercussions in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. The pro player made a presentation explaining his situation to his viewers and clearly stated that he wants to compete in the European league.

Rekkles narrated how his buyout from G2 Esports was very high for teams in the region to pick him up and that only when other players started getting recruited, G2 Esports lowered it. He said, “KCorp were interested, luckily enough for me. I think if they weren’t, I would have been so f****, actually. I was really lucky that they were interested in working together, but I still wasn’t cheap. When I still say ‘lowered buyouts,’ my buyout was still substantial, to the point where this is still being a problem today."

After League of Legends European Championship (LEC) reporter Brieuc Seeger aka LEC Woloo revealed that Rekkles was looking to role-swap to support, Rekkles was forced to address it.

Explaining this further, the pro player stated that it was not out of desperation and that he has already received multiple offers this off-season. Rekkles stated that he was at a point in his career where he could offer so much more than being just an ADC.

He said, “I have the game sense for it. On support it’s particularly important I would say because you have to really understand what’s going on on a more global stage than when you need to when you play an ADC.” Rekkles also pointed out that he knows the role very well because he’s played alongside it for over 12 years.

It would be interesting to see where and in which role Rekkles ends up in. Additionally, fans are also curious to see which team picks up veteran jungler Jankos during the League of Legends esports off-season.
