Riot Games is changing the state of League of Legends and will make champions durable since the damage output in the game is too high.
It will also be making a few adjustments and releasing nerfs to the surrounding systems on the Summoner’s Rift to hit the right balance.
The Durability Update will go live on 25th May.

Come LoL Patch 12.10, Riot Games is introducing major changes to the durability of every champion on the League of Legends (LoL) roster. This is Riot’s way of combating and reducing the overall amount of damage present in the game currently. Apart from boosting some of the vital stats in the game, Riot will also be nerfing and making adjustments to the surrounding systems of the Summoner’s Rift to hit the right balance. The company briefed the community on what to expect in LoL Patch 12.10 through a detailed blogpost on its website.

General buffs and nerfs in LoL Patch 12.10

Riot Games will be increasing the following stats in LoL Patch 12.10:

  • Base Health

  • Health per Level

  • Armor per Level

  • Magic Resist per Level

The nerfs in this patch will be directed at the sustain in-game and some of the other buffs include Baron Nashor, Turrets, and mana regeneration. Riot wrote, “While tons of damage can be fun and exciting, we believe that increasing champions’ defensive stats will be beneficial for letting players showcase their skill by giving them more opportunities for counterplay and to live out their high moments.

Need for durability in League of Legends

Riot discussed the pros and cons of lower survivability in League of Legends. While players may enjoy high-kill games and lower survivability can also make pro play interesting, it also leads to game states where squishy targets struggle to have an impact in the game.

Riot stated that it still thinks the game is at its best with fast-paced, high-intensity combat, but acknowledged that it has gone too far in that direction. Hence, it is reining it back a bit. “We don’t think any particular champions, items, or systems are out of line (even if they may have contributed to the root cause), which is why we’re increasing durability across the board, rather than removing or toning down specific offensive sources.

LoL Patch 12.10 highlights

According to Riot, players will see the following changes through the Champion Durability Update in LoL Patch 12.10:

  • Players will feel that their champions are dealing and taking less damage

  • Burst champions will have to commit more resources or be further ahead to get quick kills

  • Bigger windows of opportunity for counterplay

  • Skirmishes and team fights will last longer

Riot also stated that increasing overall durability has a lot of side effects and hence it is reducing sustain across the board. It added that it has proactively adjusted some of the variables over the last few patches and that it will continue to do so following the launch of LoL Patch 12.10.

Burst damage dealing champions will certainly be affected by this durability update. Starting from this patch, getting bursted down by assassins will depend on the bad positioning of the squishy target and of course, the skills of the player on the damage dealer. “Our intent with this update isn’t to over-nerf burst champions, so we’ll be keeping an eye on them to make sure they land in a healthy spot.

Since this is a major update for the state of the game, Riot will be closely monitoring the meta. It said, “We’ll be monitoring role and champion balance extra carefully over the next few weeks. Our goal is to hit a sweet spot where all classes are viable, tactical combat has good pacing allowing for moments of skill expression, and the balance of snowballing and scaling are in healthy states.

According to the official patch schedule, LoL Patch 12.10 and the durability update will be released on 25th May.
