LEC 2022 Summer Split Finals to Be Held in Malmö, Sweden
Riot Games and League of Legends Esports have announced that the League of Legends European Championship (LEC) is headed to Sweden for this year’s Summer Finals. The last time the LEC’s Summer Finals were held outside the Berlin studio was in 2019 when the league hosted it in Athens, Greece. According to Riot Games’ announcement, the LEC 2022 Summer Split Finals will be held on 10th and 11th September and will take place at the Malmö Arena which can house 20,000 fans.
The top three teams will play top-class League of Legends games in the LEC 2022 Summer Split Finals at the Arena in the lower bracket finals and the grand finals.
First LEC roadshow in three years
EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) Head of League of Legends Esports Maximilian Schmidt said, “Being the first roadshow we’ve hosted away from our Berlin studio in three years, we can’t wait to give the fans an unforgettable experience. We’re pleased to be working with the City of Malmö again and look forward to bringing the breathtaking atmosphere to their city.”
Mats Schöld, head of events at the Department of Leisure, Recreation and Sport at the City of Malmö, said that they were incredibly proud to host the LEC 2022 Summer Split Finals and that this event shows that Malmö is an event and gaming city to be reckoned with.
The company also stated that it has not ventured to Sweden since the LEC Finals in Stockholm in 2015 and that it was really excited to bring back the same excitement to the country. It wrote, “From Rekkles’ infamous Tristana pentakill in game three, to Origen’s impressive comeback in game four to force Silver Scrapes in a gripping five-game series between Fnatic and Origen. We’re ecstatic to return to the country and show Malmö the best the LEC has to offer.”
Apart from this, Riot also revealed that it has exciting plans for the LEC XPO at the MalmöMässan Exhibition & Congress Center, located close to the arena. Notably, Malmö was supposed to host the LEC 2020 Summer Finals, but the event was canceled owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, on the same dates in North America (NA), the LCS 2022 Championship will be held in Chicago, Illinois in the United States. The championship will see the crowning of the best North American team at the United Center in Chicago after a showdown on 10th and 11th September.
Both the LEC 2022 Summer Split Finals and the LCS 2022 Championship will be huge for the teams since the split will decide who gets to represent Europe and NA at Worlds 2022 later this year. However, it is encouraging to see Riot Games slowly bring back crowds to its events and create more engaging opportunities for pros, teams, and fans.
