Highlights
Mythic Essence is the new form of premium currency in League of Legends that was introduced in LoL Patch 12.6.
Mythic Essence has permanently replaced Gemstones and Prestige Points. While Gemstones were converted into Mythic Essence, Prestige Points were completely retired.
Players can initially earn 10 Mythic Essence by completing a matchmade game mission that is currently live on the servers.

The newest League of Legends (LoL) patch to grace the Summoner’s Rift was LoL Patch 12.6. This patch brought in some bigger scope changes to the game by way of champion reworks and the revamp for the Gemstone and Prestige Point system within the game. Now, the Gemstones and Prestige Points have been combined into a single new currency that does not have an expiry, and is now called the Mythic Essence.

At the beginning of Season 12, the Product lead for personalization and events, Jonathan “Bellissimoh” Belliss, revealed that Riot Games was introducing new mythic content, event passes, and loot milestones. He also revealed that in addition to the mythic and prestige skins revamp, a new seasonal mythic skin line called Ashen Knights would be released this year.

For the convenience of players, Riot Games had converted all the Gemstones simply lying in players’ inventory into Mythic Essence. Each Gemstone was converted into 10 Mythic Essence. However, Prestige Points were retired completely and Riot did not offer any conversion for that. Now, just like the older currencies, Mythic Essence can be used to buy special skins, accessories, and other items from the loot tab in the League of Legends client. The new Mythic Shop features content that rotates on a regular basis, including the return of past Prestige skins.

Earning Mythic Essence in-game

Getting Mythic Essence in League of Legends is not going to be a hassle. It is pretty much the same system that existed before for the old premium currencies and players can earn Mythic Essence in the following ways:

  • Hextech Chest

  • Masterwork Chest

  • Orbs from Missions

Mythic Essence

Additionally, in order to balance out the removal of Prestige Points from the game, Riot has also increased the drop rate of Mythic Essence in Masterwork Chests.

To get the community excited about this new system, Riot Games is also making Mythic Essence available through a one-time mission between 31st March and 2nd May. This mission, titled “Introducing Mythic Essence!”, works only for matchmade games and completing this will grant a player 10 Mythic Essence.

Mission to earn 10 ME

Riot Games wrote, “Mythic skins and accessories in the Mythic Shop will rotate every three months (every 6 patches). New Mythic skins debut at 100 ME [Mythic Essence] and will cost 125 ME in future unvaults.

To see what’s on offer for this rotation and to learn about the options that will be available all year-round, players can read about them from Riot’s announcement.

On a different note, Riot also removed the ability to activate loot shards to rent champions, skins, and ward skins for seven days since virtually no player used the system and “many players didn't even know it existed (heh).
