Hilarious Reactions to Bjergsen’s Academy Debut Turns Twitter Into a Laugh Riot
The offseason roster changes themselves were a bit too much to handle for the fans of the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS). And now right before the start of North America’s Academy league, Team Liquid surprised the League of Legends community with the announcement of Søren "Bjergsen" Bjerg’s Academy debut. People have been posting endless memes on social media after seeing the announcement that the star mid-laner would go up against Academy players, who are upcoming talents so to say.
Team Liquid announced that Bjergsen will be filling in for its Academy roster as the mid-laner, since Academy mid-laner Harry "Haeri" Kang could not arrive in time in Los Angeles to compete in the tournament. Team Liquid said that Haeri was held up in Australia due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions. It also confirmed that Bjergsen’s LCS Lock-In participation will not be affected by this.
League of Legends pros and celebrities react to Bjergsen’s Academy debut
Bjergsen who debuted in the LCS in 2013 has not played matches in the Academy league till now. After a brief stint as a coach, he returned to pro play as a mid-laner for Team Liquid in 2022. Whilst still being appreciative of Bjergsen’s work ethic and commitment, the League of Legends community has been posting hilarious memes on social media.
On a Reddit thread, one user pointed out that it was a great opportunity for the Academy players. "I think it's a great opportunity for the opposing midlaner. Bjerg is playing with an unfamiliar roster, so it's more fair than bringing up a midlaner from academy to try out on the LCS team they are unfamiliar with. Every academy player should want to get better and losing to someone (when reviewed properly) should help find weaknesses, and if they win should help build confidence. look at TSM academy playing in Lock in, I don't think any of them are complaining playing LCS teams win or lose," they wrote.
League of Legends pros and personalities also took the opportunity to share their thoughts on Bjergsen’s first Academy game.
Erik "Treatz" Wessén, the support player for SK Gaming, jested on Twitter about what an Academy player would probably feel after seeing the announcement from Team Liquid.
Ex-pro player and former Team SoloMid (TSM) teammate Yiliang Peter "Doublelift" Peng also joked about the situation on Twitter, “A few more years in Academy and this Bjergsen kid could shape up to be one of the best.”
Team Liquid’s Head Analyst Evandro de Cerqueira appreciated Bjergsen for stepping in for the Academy team to help them out during such an emergency. He wrote, “I had experiences in the past where some star players couldn't even be remotely considered to be used in academy for emergencies. Seeing what Bjergsen is doing for the team speaks volumes of who he is as a player and his work ethic.”
LCS caster Clayton “Captain Flowers” Raines joked that Academy mid-laners would be playing Dark Souls instead of League of Legends.
Team Liquid Academy lost one of their two matches against Evil Geniuses Academy, whose mid-laner Max “Soligo” Soong put forth a stellar performance on Twisted Fate. Bjergsen who played Sylas had a KDA of 5/3/4 in the match. But it bounced back strong in match two with Bjergsen’s signature pick on Zilean.
Team Liquid Academy’s Head Coach Jake "Spawn" Tiberi said the one-match win against Evil Geniuses Academy was not what they hoped for.
Watch out for Bjergsen’s next Academy series against Counter Logic Gaming (CLG) Academy on Friday, 20th Jan.
