It had been reported in November last year that G2 Esports would be overhauling its Valorant roster ahead of VCT (Valorant Champions Tour) 2022. Some shuffles were made and a new roster was fixed, but a few weeks back Oscar "mixwell" Cañellas, who was part of the active lineup, was benched as G2 gave chance to the young talent Wassim "keloqz" Cista.
Well, the 18-year-old seems to have utilized this opportunity really well as he helped G2 Esports qualify for VCT 2022: Europe, Middle- East and Africa (EMEA) Stage 1 Challengers. On the other hand, it has spelled trouble for mixwell who announced earlier today on 25th January that he has been officially benched by the Spanish organization.
Mixwell announces that he has been officially benched from G2 Esports
The 26-year-old Spaniard announced earlier today that he has been benched from G2 Esports and is currently seeking new offers to continue competing in Valorant. This announcement has come from mixwell's personal Twitter account, but no such statement has been published by the Spanish esports organization so far.
G2 Esports had made multiple roster changes in late 2021. After it failed to qualify for Valorant Champions 2021 preparations were made in advance for its Valorant roster to compete for VCT 2022. This included parting ways with Jose "koldamenta" Luis and their head coach Neil "neilzinho" Finlay, while also benching keloqz.
Despite the changes and a direct invite to VCT 2022: Europe Stage 1 Challengers - Closed Qualifier 1, G2 started the 2022 competitive season with back-to-back defeats which resulted in a 7th-8th place finish.
Immediately thereafter mixwell was benched and keloqz was given another opportunity to return to the active lineup for VCT 2022: Europe Stage 1 Challengers - Open Qualifier 2.
This new iteration of G2's Valorant roster fought its way through the second open qualifier and even managed to win the VCT 2022: Europe Stage 1 Challengers - Closed Qualifier. The victory resulted in G2 Esports qualifying for the VCT 2022: EMEA Stage 1 Challengers which is scheduled to take place from 11th February to 27th March.
With this, keloqz's position on G2's active roster was booked without a doubt and just a few days later mixwell's announcement has turned all the speculations and rumors into reality. However, the organization has given him permission to search for options and he has already shown willingness to being open to any offers.
G2 Esports Valorant roster for VCT 2022 is as follows,
Žygimantas "nukkye" Chmieliauskas - IGL
Auni "AvovA" Chahade
Wassim "keloqz" Cista
Aaro "hoody" Peltokangas
Johan "Meddo" Renbjörk Lundborg
Daniil "pipsoN" Meshcheryakov - Coach
