It was announced that the game is all set to debut as a demo at Evolution Championship (Evo) Series. First teased at the 2019 Evo event, the game will now be available as a playable demo at the 2023 Championship Series. Alongside this, a lot of players were also given a demo of the game at Riot Game’s headquarters and the reviews have been absolutely raving. Many prominent members of the Fighter Game Community (FGC) got to playtest the early version of Project L and all of them have given positive reviews.
FGC’s prominent members review Project L
Nine-time EVO champion and veteran Justin Wong talked about Project L on his YouTube channel on 26th July titled “I PLAYED RIOT'S FIGHTING GAME PROJECT L!.” This video featured many gameplay clips featuring Darius, Ekko, and Ahri. He called the mechanics “sick” and noted that it is very similar to other classic fighting games.
Wong also noted that Darius was the easiest character to play and a good pick for beginners to try. Talking about the experience, he said, "I don't think I've ever been in a process where I was able to give my feedback on a fighting game like this. They had so many people. It was not just pro players, they had content creators and a lot of internal testing."
Likewise, John “Jmcrofts” Crofts, a popular fighting game streamer, said he also tested out Project L and that he played the game for a solid 12 hours over two days. He stated that he found the tag-team functionality of the game "mind-blowing" and called it the biggest selling points of the game.
Another prominent figure in the community who reviewed Project L is William Peter Hjelte aka Leffen. He noted that the focal point of this fighting game is its movement and said, "It is so fun to move in this game." As closing thoughts, Leffen confidently stated that Project L has a bright future and also acknowledged Riot Games' contributions as a publisher. He also added that the team has worked really hard to make a game that appeals to the FGC and not the "lowest common denominator" that appeals to people who do not know fighting games.
Fans should note that the EVO championship kicks off on 3rd August and will conclude on 6th August. It will be exciting to see the new characters revealed at the event.
