Respawn Entertainment has changed up the way Ranked Promotional Trials will happen in Apex Legends. Promotional Trials were introduced in Season 19 of Apex Legends. The feature was intended to improve the matchmaking experience for players but it has received much backlash since its release. Here is all you need to know about the changes to Promotional Trials in Apex Legends’ ranked mode.
Apex Legends Promotional Trials changed
Respawn announced they are tweaking Promo Trials in Ranked for Apex matches to make some of them easier to achieve. In Season 19, players could enter a Promotional Trial state when they reach the top of their tier. During a Trial, LP loss and gains are frozen, allowing the player to focus on completing the trial.
Completing the conditions of a Trial within the given match count limit (either by winning a game or completing the alternative) allows for promotion into the next tier with a 250 LP promotional bonus. If you fail to complete the Trial within the match limit it results in the Trial ending and a loss of LP based on the player’s performance. Trials are time limited to 5 matches, increasing by 1 game each time a player fails and then reenters the same Trial, up to a max of 10 retries. However, Promotional Trials can be skipped during Provisional matches.
These changes were meant to combat the ‘rat’ meta of the previous ranked season, requiring players to prove they had the skills to be placed in a higher rank. However, this made climbing ranks significantly harder as the system “punishes everyone by impeding their rank growth”, according to a Reddit user. Another user pointed out that, “Ratting and avoiding fights has always been an issue in ranked, but with the promotional trials requiring multiple top 5s or wins to rank up its encouraging this behavior exponentially more.” This has lead to Respawn Entertainment pushing an update to make Promo Trials easier to get through.
This update is intended to ease up the requirements by changing up the alternative objectives players will be required to complete their Promo trials in Apex. This applies only for lower ranks, since Diamond and above ranks do not have alternative objectives.
Apex Legends Promotional Trials changes receive further backlash
Replies to the original tweet include reactions from pro players, who do not seem very happy with the changes. Some players are asking to remove Promo Trials completely and to replace it with a better system.
Some players are asking Respawn to bring back the Season 13 ranking system, which is widely regarded as the best in Apex’s history.
