Riot Games has vowed to keep its older-generation champions relevant in League of Legends.
In League of Legends Season 2023, players can expect to see more Mid-scope updates, VGUs and CGUs.
Here's all the company has planned for League of Legends Season 2023.

Riot Games has been hard at work in the last couple of years to fine-tune the kits and looks of older League of Legends champions through its mid-scope updates, comprehensive gameplay updates (CGUs), and also visual and gameplay updates (VGUs). Mid-scope updates for champions including Taliyah, Olaf, Swain, and many others were received positively in the player community, and found success in what they set out to do. Following this trend, Riot Games stated that it will continue to tweak older champions and bring them to the forefront of the playing field along with the new-generation champions in League of Legends Season 2023.

In the latest LoL Pls video for League of Legends Season 2023, Product Lead for Champions Lexi “Riot Lexical” Gao said, “This season, we are focusing a bit more on smaller updates to the parts of the champion roster that have been left in the dust. We want to continue improving older champions’ gameplay fantasies. So we’ll be doing more mid-scope updates throughout 2023.”

Apart from mid-scope updates, players will also see the progress on Skarner’s VGU. They will also be treated to a new lineup of skins in League of Legends Season 2023.

Here’s all we know about the League of Legends Season 2023 roadmap.

Mid-scope updates in League of Legends: A glimpse at Neeko

Firstly, mid-scope updates are not complete reworks of champions but are adjustments made on a smaller scale to the champions’ kits to help improve their pick and win rates in the game. Riot Games rolls out these updates in an attempt to revive these champions and bring them back into play on Summoner’s Rift and notably, these updates take lesser time to push.

In its latest developer video, Riot showed off Neeko’s mid-scope changes. Game designer Ezra “Phlox” Lynn gave a sneak peek of Neeko’s passive. Now, instead of just mimicking ally champions, Neeko can turn into any of the following:

  • A minion

  • A jungle plant

  • A jungle monster

  • A Teemo shroom

She can probably also turn into other things in the Summoner’s Rift environment and we’ll have to wait and see what exactly her passive is. Some of the other mid-scope updates or reworks that players can look forward to are for Rell and Yuumi.

Upcoming skins in League of Legends

Firstly, Riot Games revealed that in 2023, Kalista, Aurelion Sol, and Kled will be getting new skins. Some of the other skin lines and thematics coming our way in League of Legends Season 2023 are as follows:

  • Faerie Realms

  • Cats vs. Dogs

  • Lunar Gods and Mythmakers

Updates on Skarner’s VGU

Talking about the upcoming Skarner VGU, Riot Lexical said, “The Skarner VGU team has started exploring ways to dial up his scorpion fantasy. At this phase, we’re leaving no arthropod-hiding stone unturned to find exciting themes, kits, and stories.

Players were asked to look out for a detailed developer blog on the progress very soon. Notably,  Skarner won the fan vote in February 2022, beating Shyvana, Kog’Maw, Tryndamere, and Nocturne for a full VGU.

Additionally, apart from the mid-scope updates, the Skarner VGU, and the new skins, players will also be treated to new voiceovers for champions including Nidalee and Varus as they cross paths with the latest champions coming into League of Legends Season 2023.
