Riot Games is changing its pricing system for its League of Legends champions.
For the new pricing system, Riot is now focusing on how many seasons the champion has been live rather than how many champions have been released since.

Riot Games’ League of Legends is a game that is ever-growing, dynamic, and has unique gameplay potential. The game currently has 162 champions, with the Pride of Nazumah, K’Sante being the latest champion who hit the Summoner’s Rift in 2022. One can imagine how difficult it is to unlock all these champions using Blue Essence (BE) or Riot Points (RP) in the game without the help of game passes. As a result, Riot Games has decided to update the pricing of its champions with the goal of making acquiring champions easier for new players and using the pricing system to help guide players to champions that they are more likely to enjoy early on in their League of Legends journey.

Riot Games said, “Our existing pricing model is a bit archaic. It's slow to update, only considers the age of the champion, and isn’t in line with how we feel players should be acquiring their roster these days. After all, League is about the champions, so we’re going to improve it!

League of Legends Champions: New Pricing System

Riot Games stated clearly that the League of Legends champions pricing system will now be based on how many seasons the champion has been live rather than how many champions have been released since. It noted that it plans for new champions to initially have a higher price point, which after a week shall be discounted, and shall further go on to get an additional discount after two seasons.

Additionally, champions that undergo VGUs (Visual/Gameplay Updates), CGUs (Core/Comprehensive Gameplay Updates), or Midscope updates that change their tier will also see their prices updated if Riot Games feel that they have become better experiences for new and returning players.

The new League of Legends champion pricing is as follows:

  • 450 BE / 260 RP - Champions that suit new players that are known for their strong fantasy and an approachable kit. (Malphite, Miss Fortune, and Yuumi).

  • 1350 BE / 585 RP - Champions that are a bit more complex than the lower tier, but still approachable. These champions have a more nuanced skill check but maintain reasonable skill floors. (Yasuo, Lucian, and Sett).

  • 3150 BE / 790 RP - Champions that are known for a larger degree of difficulty or specialization with a steeper learning curve, (LeBlanc, Shaco, and Yorick).

  • 4444 BE / 880 RP - Riot defined this tier, “Only perfection and beauty are allowed at this tier. HAHAHAHA,” referring to just champion Jhin.

  • 4800 BE / 880 RP - The majority of the League of Legends champion roster will be placed in this bucket.

  • 6300 BE / 975 RP - Champions that have come out in the past two seasons will be in this tier and will decrease in pricing at the start of the next season.

  • 7800 BE / 975 RP - Champions that have come out in the past week will be placed in this bucket.

Riot Games, apart from these price changes, will be rolling out champion bundles that “cover a variety of gameplay roles within each tier.” It believes that these bundles will be even more cost-effective.

League of Legends players will see the champion pricing changes reflected in their clients with LoL Patch 13.5, which is officially scheduled to release on 8th March.
