Activision recently announced the shutdown of Warzone 1, a.k.a. Warzone Caldera.
The studio wants to focus on Warzone 2.0 and Warzone Mobile.
Fans of Warzone are left wondering if they'll see the island map of Caldera again.

Call of Duty: Warzone fans were thrilled to see a sequel for the game come out in November of last year with others left wondering if Caldera is coming to Warzone 2? While Warzone 2 offered players a chance to battle it out on a brand new map and included all new features, many were still nostalgic for the jungles of Caldera. Warzone 1 players could still continue playing the earlier iteration of the game, now rebranded Warzone Caldera, but Activision made a surprise announcement a few days ago. In a blog post released on 22nd June, the developer and publisher stated that it would be taking Warzone Caldera offline on 21st September 2023 to focus on Warzone 2.0 and Warzone Mobile. This left many fans with the question, is Caldera coming to Warzone 2?

Is Caldera coming to Warzone 2?

The original Warzone, now Warzone Caldera, had four main maps available for play; Caldera, Rebirth Island, Verdansk and Fortune’s Keep. While maps like Verdansk are set to appear in Warzone Mobile, Activision has not yet stated plans for the others like Fortune’s Keep or Rebirth Island.

One of the maps available in Warzone 1, Verdansk will be available in Warzone Mobile.

Right now, Warzone 1 only offers players the chance to play solos and quads for battle royale on the Caldera map. As of now, Activision has not announced any plans of Caldera coming to Warzone 2. For the sequel, the developer currently only has the main Al Mazrah map with two additional Resurgence maps, Ashika Island and Vondel, available in the latest seasons. So once Warzone Caldera goes offline in September, the Caldera map will not be available to play unless Activision has any plans of bringing it to Warzone 2.0. However, all hope is not lost for fans of the map, since Activision often brings older maps to its various iterations throughout their games. Older maps from Black Ops and Modern Warfare have been brought to newer games so there is a good chance fans will see Caldera come to Warzone 2.

Why is Activision taking Warzone Caldera offline?

In the Activision blog post released on 22nd June, the publisher said it was taking the decision to shut down Warzone Caldera in September. The developer said it was doing this to "focus on future Call of Duty content including the current Warzone free-to-play experience." Activision also stated that, players should prepare for even more Warzone content across consoles and PC, as well as a new era of Battle Royale on the go with the launch of Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, which includes a shared Battle Pass and cross-progression. Unfortunately, while all Caldera gameplay, player progression, inventories and online services will expire on that date, players would still have access to purchased content in Warzone Caldera from Modern Warfare, Black Ops Cold War, or Vanguard in those specific games.
