Cross-play is enabled by default in Modern Warfare 2 but players can choose to turn it off.
Only PlayStation users can disable crossplay in-game while Xbox players have to disable it from their console settings.
PC players do not have any way to disable cross-play and it stays enabled.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launched with cross-play capabilities and it has become a controversial feature within the community. While the feature is great if you want to play with or against players on other platforms, some players want the feature disabled. By restricting yourself to a single platform, you get to compete only against the same input method, which makes matches more fair and fun. If you want to turn off cross-play in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, here’s how you can do it.

How to turn off cross-play in Modern Warfare 2

You can turn off cross-play in Modern Warfare 2 if you are a PlayStation user but there is no option to turn off cross-play for PC and Xbox users in Modern Warfare 2. There is a workaround available for Xbox users that you can use but if you are on PC, you are out of luck.

How to turn off cross-play on Xbox

  1. Head to your Xbox settings menu

  2. Open the Account settings and click on Privacy and Online Safety

  3. Click on Xbox Live Privacy

  4. Click on View Details > Customise

  5. Click on Communications and Multiplayer

  6. Toggle the "You can play with people outside of Xbox Live" option to disable crossplay.

How to turn off cross-play on PlayStation

If you are a PlayStation user simply press the Options/Start button on your controller and open the Settings menu of Modern Warfare 2. You will see an option to toggle cross-play in the Account and Network section, which will allow you to turn the feature on or off whenever you want.

Should you turn off cross-play in Modern Warfare 2?

You should turn the feature on or off based on your personal preferences. If you do not have friends from other platforms that you want to play with, you can consider turning off cross-play.

Turning off cross-play means that your queue times can be longer and it can negatively affect your experience in-game. Leaving cross-play on ensures that you get matches much quicker and skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) can also be more accurate since it finds players from a much larger pool.
