How to Get Every Armor Trim in Minecraft

Armor trims are patterns for your armor that allow you to personalize your armor, add flair, and show off your Overworld travels! They come in 11 different patterns that you can dye in 10 different colors. To trim your armor, you need to hunt down a smithing template - a new required ingredient for making upgrades at the smithing table. Armor trims will be available as part of the 1.20 update and if you want to try them out, you can do so in the current Java Snapshot. Bedrock betas and previews will soon have the armor trims as well so players should keep an eye out on updates in the near future to check out the new feature. 

How to get Armor Trims in Minecraft

You can now visually customize your armor with a variety of unique trims at the Smithing Table. All armor is viable for trims except for leather armor and they are purely visual with no gameplay benefits, and can only be applied to Helmets, Chestplates, Leggings and Boots.

All trim patterns are visually the same on an armor's item icon, but the color will still change based on the trim material. To check which trim pattern a piece of armor has, you can hover over it in the inventory. Armor Trim Smithing Templates can be found all throughout the world, and each of the following structures contain their own unique Smithing Template:

• Nephrite Armor Trim – Bastion Remnant and inside the treasure room of Bastion Remnant

• Eye Armor Trim – Stronghold

• Rib Armor Trim – Nether Fortress

• Ward Armor Trim- Ancient City

• Wild Armor Trim – Jungle Temple

• Dune Armor Trim – Desert Pyramid

• Sentry Armor Trim – Pillager Outpost

• Coast Armor Trim – Shipwreck

• Tide Armor Trim – Ocean Monument

• Vex Armor Trim – Woodland Mansion

• Snout Armor Trim – Bastion Remnant

• Spire Armor Trim – End City

How to get Smithing Templates in Minecraft

Smithing Templates are found in chests in their respective structure, except for the Ocean Monument. Instead of finding it in chests, Elder Guardians sometimes drop a Smithing Template upon death. Some Armor Trim Smithing Templates are rarer than others, so luck plays a big factor when it comes to finding all of the shiny new templates.

An armor trim has two properties: a pattern and a material. The pattern is defined by the Smithing Template used to apply the trim, and represents the visual pattern of the trim. The material is defined by what ingredient you used to apply the trim, and represents the color of the trim.

The viable ingredients you can use to define the color of your armor trim are the following:

• Iron

• Copper

• Gold

• Lapis

• Emerald

• Diamond

• Netherite

• Redstone

• Amethyst

• Quartz

When crafting armor there is one catch that you need to know. Armor cannot have the same material it is made of applied to it as a trim. For example, a Golden Chestplate cannot have a Golden Armor Trim so you’ll need to work your way around the limitation.
