Highlights
The Applying Update error in Overwatch 2 usually gets fixed by a quick restart but sometimes it can persist.
Always restart your game or PC/console to see if it fixes the issue before trying anything else.
Pending hotfixes or patches can also cause the error message to pop up in some cases.

Overwatch 2’s launch issues have resurfaced recently leaving players frustrated. Some of the issues that we saw at the launch of Overwatch 2 last year are recurring after a recent update, with the “Applying Update” error being one of the most annoying ones of them all. Players constantly find themselves starting at the screen that suggests an update is being applied but nothing seems to happen. A simple restart usually does the trick but if you are still facing issues, here’s what you need to do to fix the Applying Update error in Overwatch 2.

Applying Update Error in Overwatch 2: How to Fix

The first thing you should do is exit the game and restart it. The issue can occur if there are pending hotfixes that need to be installed. If a restart does not do the job, feel free to restart your PC or console and try one more time.

PC

  1. Open the Battle.net desktop app.

  2. Click the icon of the game you are trying to repair.

  3. Click the cogwheel next to the Play button and select Check for Updates.

Xbox

If you set your Xbox to automatically update games and apps in Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates, your games will be updated as new versions become available. As soon as you attempt to launch Overwatch 2, the game will automatically update if you are connected to the internet.

PlayStation

  • Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates.

  •  Turn on Auto-Download or Auto-Install in Rest Mode.

When you turn on Auto-Install, the next time you turn on your PS5 console, your games and apps will be updated to their latest versions.

You can select Overwatch 2 and click on the Options menu to check for updates. Any pending updates will be installed immediately.

Nintendo Switch

  1. Ensure the Nintendo Switch console is connected to the Internet.

  2. From the HOME Menu, select the icon for Overwatch 2

  3. Press the + or - Button on your controller, then select Software Update followed by Via the Internet.

Your game will be updated and you should be able to continue playing without running into the Applying Update error in Overwatch 2.
