In 2015, Mojang made a change that allowed players to choose either character as a means of making the game feel more inclusive for its audience. Go to your Minecraft profile page on Minecraft.net and set the first dropdown box to "Classic (Steve)". You can get the default Steve skin by clicking on "Reset skin" and upload another skin if you choose to later on.
