Axolotls are a relatively new addition to the game, they are useful in fighting hostile aquatic mobs.
Here is how to breed axolotls in Minecraft.

An axolotl is an aquatic mob found in the lush caves biome in Minecraft. Axolotls are a recent addition, coming to the game in 1.17. Axolotls come in five different colors and fight other aquatic mobs in the game, especially hostile ones. Axolotls can be tamed and are great for taking on aquatic enemies like the guardians. Here is all you need to know about Axolotls and how to breed them.

All about Axolotls in Minecraft

Axolotls are passive towards players, unless attacked. You can tame an axolotl and even attach a lead to it. Axolotls spawn underwater in the lush caves biome and when there is a clay block less than five blocks below the spawning space. Axolotls can be one of five colors: pink, brown, gold, cyan and blue.

Axolotls can leave the water and wander around on land as long as there is water at least 2 blocks deep within 16 blocks of it. However, it only goes 8 to 9 blocks from the water’s edge. It can survive for up to 5 minutes outside of water. Note that axolotls can also die out of water as passengers in a boat. Axolotls do not die on land in rain or in a thunderstorm, unlike fish, dolphins and squids.

Axolotls will generally attack all aquatic creatures with the exception of turtles, dolphins, frogs and other axolotls. It deals a heart point damage per attack. If an axolotl takes damage underwater, it may play dead and drop to the ground for 10 seconds (with a ⅓ chance of regaining 2 heart points) while getting Regeneration I. While it is healing, hostile mobs will ignore it. Axolotls prioritize attacking hostile mobs over non-hostile mobs.

How breed Axolotls in Minecraft

Axolotls are passive toward players and can be attached to leads. Axolotls give Regeneration I for 5 seconds per Axolotl in the fight, up to a duration of 2 minutes (Java edition only) and remove Mining Fatigue when a player kills a mob that is in combat with an axolotl. This makes them useful companions in the game.

Adult axolotls can be lured and put into breeding mode with buckets of tropical fish. Lure two adult axolotls with the bucket and feed them the fish. They will mate and produce a baby axolotl. Axolotls have a cooldown of 5 minutes (Java) or 1 minute (Bedrock edition) before they can be bred again. Baby axolotls usually follow the adults around and take 20 minutes to become adults.
