Valve confirms the return of the Dota 2 Compendium in the upcoming TI12 update, set to launch just a week before The International 2023.
The Compendium is a seasonal pass that offers exclusive rewards and supports The International, contributing a significant portion to the tournament's prize pool.
Valve's decision to focus on gameplay changes rather than cosmetics in this year's Compendium distinguishes it from the traditional Battle Passes.

In a recent blog post dated 24th September, Valve confirmed that the The International 2023 (TI12) update will bring back the Dota 2 Compendium. The Compendium is a seasonal pass that players can purchase to support the esports scene and earn exclusive rewards while at it. The Compendium is set to launch next week, with The International 2023 kicking off on 12th October. Along with the reveal of the Compendium, Valve also released details about pubstomps, a short film contest, and a cosplay contest for TI12.

With the wait officially over, here’s everything you need to know about the Dota 2 Compendium for TI12 this year.

What is the Dota 2 Compendium?

The Compendium is a seasonal pass that players can purchase to support The International and earn exclusive rewards. It was first started in 2013 right in time for The International 2023. The Compendium was released a few months before The International and was available for purchase until the end of the tournament. Usually, Compendium contributes about 25% of its total earnings towards the tournament’s prize pool.

However, earlier this year, Valve released a statement on 20th June 2023 noting that it will not be focusing on the cosmetics aspect of the seasonal pass and rather focus on bringing new and fun changes to the game. It mentioned that it was intentionally not calling this update a Battlepass.

Differences between Battle Passes and Compendiums

Battle Passes and Compendiums are both seasonal passes that are very similar and can be easily confused. However, there are some key differences between the two.

Battle Passes are more general and are often a part of tournaments such as the Majors. These passes also offer players a variety of rewards such as cosmetics, couriers, and taunts.

Compendiums are more specifically focused on The International, Dota 2’s premier event. They offer players a chance to earn exclusive rewards which include a variety of features such as Fantasy Dota, predictions, and other interactive features. Compendiums are a good option for players who are hardcore Dota 2 fans who want to support The International and earn exclusive rewards.

How to get the TI12 Compendium

The actual date of release and the price of the TI12 Compendium has not been revealed by Valve at the time of writing. However, it is expected to be available for purchase on the Steam store next week on 26th or 27th September. The price is expected to be similar to previous Compendiums and players can hope to see them priced at around $10 USD.

The return of the Dota 2 Compendium is good news for Dota 2 fans. The Compendium is a popular feature that adds a lot of excitement to The International. It is also a great way for players to support the tournament and earn exclusive rewards.
